I hope you had a wonderful xmas and I wish you all super 2012.
Over the holidays I started to put together January's mix and after about ten minutes I realised it was going off in a different direction I then manifested into a cyborg and decided to stick to that path rather than face destruction. This is a labour of love mix which to be honest is probably the biggest mix I've done. It is a electronic journey through different styles of music with me filtering in little pieces in between tunes. It was a very enjoyable experience especially as I was helped along the way with bourbon and beer. There's bits of Vangelis, Neil Armstrong and Patrick Moore, The Tomorrow people some Old School Arcade games dotted through the mix - Defender, Galaga, Galaxian, Phoenix and Moon Cresta. I have to say I'm very pleased how it come out and think it flows pretty well. Please give it a shot if you like. Business as usual for Feb with more emphasis on jazz and soul.

Intro - The Clangers
The Clangers was a delightful stop motion animated kids show about this lovely little mouse like creatures who happen to live on a small planet a bit like the Moon, with another creature called the Soup Dragon. I have my Mum to thank for sitting in front of this beautiful little series which must of calm little Mikey down and send me off to my journeys through space. Pretty much been in awe with things spacey since then and I can only imagine that The Clangers and my Mum being the catalyst to that. The Clangers can from the brain of super talented Oliver Postgate, writer and narrator, and Peter Firmin, Model Maker and animator. The duo also made classics like Ivor The Engine and Bagpuss. Olivers mellow tones were enough to mellow any mischievous child.

Mike Huckaby – Jupiter - SYNTH [My Life With The Wave 12"]
Infectious deep house deep techno crossover tune from Detroit wizard Mike Huckaby. Yep you guessed it Jupiter had to go in the space related start up of the show and what a way to start. What a groove of deepness. From a project centred around using the awesome looking and what I'm hearing one of the granddaddy of all modern synths – the Waldorf Wave. Chico Hamilton –Space For Stacy - Blue Note [Peregrinations]
Here we go more "space" but most probably meant in a different sense as in giving the said Stacy more space to move but hey it says space and that's good enough for me. Superb Blue Note recording from 1975 from Chico which features amazing cuts like "Andy's Walk" and one of my favs "Abdullah & Abraham". The cut I went for is a fast and furious grooving jazz tune filled to the brim with some mad paced percussion.

Moe Koffman - Dinosaurus - Janus Records [Museum Pieces]
Canadian jazz musician and composer Moe Koffman plays the flute and saxophone along with other reed instruments. I've only came to know about him when the Soul Brother label compilation called African Spirits came out in 2004 with the most mellow cut filled with emotion and spirit, the tune called "Days Gone By (Egyptology)". Beautiful breathtaking tune. To be honest I was a little surprised to find out he was a white Canadian. I had the fortune of finding the lp Museum Pieces on a family trip to Rotterdam this year. Wasn't expecting the whole lp to be great to be honest and really just picked it up for the "Days Gone By" tune but "Dinsaurus" is a great funky jazz tune and it was hard not to use "Pharaoh's Dream" which is equally as good. Well recommended record.

Jerry Peters – Love Song - Mercury [Blueprint For Discovery]
A remarkable recording from Jerry Peters which I'm pretty sure was his only solo recording. I know he did a great soundtrack called "Melinda" along side Jerry Butler (which I must add a tune to a future show from that). Please let me know if he did record any other lp's. This "Blueprint For Discovery" is filled with heartfelt raw emotion and pure soul. Takes you on a staggering journey through his soul which the title pretty much sums up. I could pick any track to be honest for this mix but "Kuri Monga Nuie" and "If you leave me now" have been featured on some of my past mixes, so now it's time for "Love Song". Very creative artwork too on some nice think card. Great recordome nice think card. Great record

Cleopatra Jones - trailer
JJ Johnson - Go Chase Cleo - Warner Brothers [Cleopatra Jones OST]
Super sexy model Tamara Dobson starred in the Blaxploitation Cleopatra Jones films, there were two I believe. In the films she plays a fashion model which covers up for a her job as a secret government agent who dishes out pain to the dregs of society, in this case Mommy, played by Shelly Winters, who is a lesbian drug dealing Baron. Cleopatra Jones 6ft 2" frame kicks ass and smash faces along the way, driving a 73 silver and black Corvette Stingray along to a very funky film score conducted by J J Johnson who had earlier done the score for the incredible "Across 110th Street"

Phillip Lambro - Murph The Surf - Motown [Murph The Surf OST]
Remember finding the film on VHS in some old video shop near us. A friend already had the soundtrack so we at least knew it was worth watching just for the music. If I'm honest I can't even really remember the film or the plot but I'm sure it was well cheesy but good fun. Might be the only release that Phillip Lambro recorded but I'm probably very wrong, please let me know if he has got some other goodies out there. The "Boat Chase" is also very funky. The film was make in 1975 was a true story of a heist by two Miami play boys who become con men.

Rick Laird - Now You Know - Muse [Soft Focus]
Lovely little jazz tune from bass guitarist Rick Laird. Rick was part of the original line up of The Mahavishnu Orchestra, I'm glad I wrote that rather than say it as I can't very well at all as you will hear on the show lol. The band's original lineup featured "Mahavishnu" John McLaughlin on acoustic and electric guitars, with members Billy Cobham on drums, Rick Laird on bass guitar, Jan Hammer on electric and acoustic piano and synthesizer, and Jerry Goodman on violin. Well traveled Rick was born in Dublin, moved to New Zealand then traveled to England and became house bassist at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club then off to Boston to join up with the Mahavishnu boys. I think Soft Focus was his only solo project.

Samurai - More Rain - Cherry Red Phonograph [Samurai]
Not to be confused with the Japanese hard rock band of the same name. This is in fact a UK progressive band who I'm sure unfortunately recorded just this lp. They are slightly similar to some of Colosseum work. The tune I picked for the mix "More Rain" is a wonderful jazzy tune with a R&B undertone. Recorded around 1971 and originally released on the Greenwich label but luckily it's been re-released as it's MEGA rare and costs a fortune. Check the cover art which is simply stunning.

Chico is the younger brother of the classic Motown family act Debarge. This tune is from the third of six solo lps he has recorded and 10 years away from his 2nd lp Kiss Serious. It was a big change in sound and very much I felt for the better. I first heard this lp when Dr Bob Jones played the superb "No Guarantee" on his Kiss FM show and I had to get my hands on a copy. I might be wrong but I'm sure I heard that he did sometime in prison for a drugs charge and when he came out he recorded this lp with songs and ideas he had wrote when spending time. A fantastic heartfelt recording which I ended up picking up in Paris for a couple of Francs. A real cheapy to pick up and if you are into the neo soul sound your love this lp.

Thurston Moore - Illuminine - Matador [Demolished Thoughts]
Singer, Songwriter and guitarist Thurston Moore is an American musician best known for his work with Sonic Youth and has worked a fair bit with Beck.To be fair I don't know his music very well and was accidentally put on to this tune by a guy called Nikey from the Brownswood forum who put up his playlist for a night he span tunes at, an excellent underground night called Fickle Formula at the 3 Blind Mice in Shoreditch run by Sir Weegee. Intrigued by a track called Space I had a listen in Youtube and came across the "Illuminine" tune which I instantly fell in love with. The whole album is a beautiful recording with nice dashes of string arrangements filtered through-out the project.

The Chris Hinze Combination - I Like To Feed A Smile On Your Face - CBS [Sister Slick]
Sorry I've been a bit naughty and cut the end of this tune off as I felt it all went a bit too jazz rock with way too much axe man guitar riffing. A personal thing but I apologise if you know and love the tune. I shamefully don't know much about Chris Hinze but what I do know is that he is highly inventive, talented flautist,and has a massive back catalogue filled with incredible music. Born in Holland and has a gift of turning his musical abilities to many genres. I feel he is quite underrated.

Desmond and Joe - Southampton Dub - Starlight Records [Dubbing In The UK]
Up there with my favorite dub lps. A cracking dub lp on the Star Light label. Filled with mellow good vibed dubs with a around the sounds of the UK for the theme. Which doesn't really mean anything to be honest as there is no way I would connect this tune with Southampton, not a chance LOL. The lp produced by Desmond Popsy Benup and was recorded at Music Works. Could of picked any one of the tunes as it's superb through-out.

The Detroit Escalator Company - Point of Entry - Peacefrog [Black Buildings]
Love love love this tune from the brilliant named Detroit Escalator Company. Beautiful laid backed ambient sounds. From the brain and talent of Detroit born Neil Ollivierra. One time label manager of the legendary Transmat records. Unfortunately he only recorded two albums, Soundtrack 313 in 1996 on the Ferox label and Black Buildings in 2001 on Peacefrog. He did pop back in 2006 with an ep called Blue Science / Between Dubnotes which I really need to hear.

Wendy and Bonnie - Endless Pathway - Skye Records [Genesis]
Genesis' is the sole record by Wendy & Bonnie put out on Skye Records in 1969. Wendy and Bonnie Flower were 2 young sisters (17 and 13 respectively) from San Francisco. The Skye label, was owned by Cal Tjader, Gary MacFarland and Gabor Szabo. So they were able to present a great bunch of session musicians and featured such legendary musicians as Jim Keltner (drums), Larry Carlton (guitar) and Mike Melvoin (keyboards. Produced by jazz great Gary McFarland. The original version goes for big money nowadays but it has luckily been re-released on Sundazed Music. Hummingbird - Spirit - A@M Records [Diamonds Nights]
British band Hummingbird had a big connection with some of the best funk rock soul bands to come out of the UK. You can connect band s like The Olympic Runners, Gonzalez and The Jeff Beck Group. The band was formed in 1974 by vocalist and guitarist Bobby Tench. This lp from 1977 is their 3rd and last and features a very good version of the classic and mega covered tune "You can't hide love" and if memory serves me right "Anna's song" is a great mellow too. Bernard Purdie was onboard for sticks action. Great band and I'm sure another of their tunes will pop up on a future show.

Marvin Pontiac - Pancakes - Strange and Beautiful Music [Greatest Hits]
Who is Marvin Pontiac and how has he managed to get a greatest Hits lp as his first lp lol. He had an interesting and unfortunate tragic life. Killed by a bus in 1977, spent time in an Mental Institution, rode down the road naked on a bike and was under the impression he was abducted by aliens. Bootlegged copies of his music got him well played in Nigeria with the beautiful song "Pancakes." My favourite from the record but there are some very interesting and well written pieces. Its a great story but Marvin is a fictional character created by John Lurie who is well known for his parts in the indie classics from Jim Jarmusch, Stranger Than Paradise and one of my top favs Down by Law.

William S. Fischer - Chains - Embryo Records [Chains]
A ground-breaking blend of funk, electronica, soul, and jazz rock. William S. Fischer, musical director for 1960's soul funk experiments of Eddie Harris, Eugene McDaniels and Les McCann, released this amazing debut solo album for the Embryo label in 1970. I read that some of these songs would later appear in the 1971 streets of New York drug movie "Born To Win" starring Robert De Niro & Karen Black. The album features bassist Ron Carter and Billy Cobham on drums. Great recording through-out, well worth tracking down.

Rachelle Ferrell - Run To Me - Capitol Records [Individuality (Can I Be Me?)]
Rachelle has an out of this world incredible voice and has the ability to hit notes in her octave range which should be humanly impossible, in a Minnie Ripperton style. At about 3.50 secs she hits the killer note. Wow. Such an talented jazz musician. Her rendition of Autumn Leaves is truly stunning. Check it here http://youtu.be/en6kmiX0SDc . Her last recording I believe was in 2002 and she seemed to disappear. I remember hearing that she had been doing presenting and church work. Please let me know if you hear her recording again.

I will start off by saying that I state on the show that I haven't got any soundtracks this week but in fact I have 5 on here, two being from documentaries, 1 from a film and 2 from television shows but hey who's counting hehe I'm full of mistakes. LOL

Intro - The Red Hand Gang - Beginning
Classic children's television show from the late 70's which featured 5 crime fighting kids in a Scooby Doo style. They used to leave red hand prints on walls and fences to mark where they had been. Such a rememberable and very catchy sound track which is pretty damn funky. Not sure who did the theme from google searches.

Biosphere - Monju 2 - Touch [N-Plants]
Some super bad ass mellow techno from this excellent named Biosphere aka Geir Jenssen from Norway. He has done a whole heap of deep and moody music and has the soundtrack for the film "Insomia" in his CV. Check his website http://www.biosphere.no/

Passport - Homunculus - Atlantic [Cross-Collateral]
Well Jazz Fusion just doesn't get any better than this I think. The drumming from Curt Cress is just something else. The way this tune just builds and builds did funny things to me when I was young and a big stoner. You would just float on waves as the track builds and drops floating on a sea of fusion. I have a big spot in my heart for Passport and this was my first lp of theirs and I used to cane this tune and the monster heavy freak out tune Jadoo which will rock and turn any head on a sound system, whether they like it or not is another thing though. Hehe.

Chad Valley - Reach Lines - Loose Lips [Equatorial Ultravox]
Beautiful music from Chad Valley aka Hugo Manuel who I have to say I don't know anything about to be honest. It's hard to find info as unfortunately Chad Valley is the same name as the UK maker of kids toys so you get in-undated with Argos and other online toy store when trying to find info. The Aluminum Group - Jinxed - Minty Fresh [Pedals]
I totally love this little unknown Chicago-based outfit The Aluminum Group which is led by brothers John and Frank Navin. So many different styles of music infused in their work, slightly containing a pop base at times but covering everthing from bossa jazz to indie ambient . This is one of my favourites of theirs from the excellent album called Pedals which is a super cool jazz vocal tune. They have done around 6 lp recordings but I'm a little worried that they might of stopped recording now. Fingers crossed they be back. Let me know if I've missed something.

Ronald Snijder - Latinetta - Black Straight Music [Black Straight Music]
Some fantastic driving flute latin jazz from Dutch flutist Ronald Snijder and filled with those lovely scatting baab baab baab bab baaab babs to keep the mood up and happy before it drops into the drum precussion end. Stereolab - The Flower Called Nowhere - Duophonic [Dots and Loops]
Super slick floating jazz bossa vocals in a style that can now only be compared as Stereolab style. What an incredible fresh and funky talented group these guys are. This tune is from their classic and maybe best, hard one to call that, LP Dots and Loops. They have done a whole gigantic body of work. I'm still to hear the "Not Music" lp from 2010. I need to get my finger out.

Saint Etienne – Chaos In The Gym - Bungalow [Warp Back To Earth 66/99]
Had to follow up Stereolab with a St Etienne tune. Another purveyor of this wonderful sound. This track here I believe is not from any of their lps but from a compilation lp celebrating the work of German composer/arranger Peter Thomas and his Sound orchestra. Lush music. Edit, I've been informed that this tune can be found on the expanded edition of 'Sound of Water'. Thanks Mr Picko-d-

Harold Butler - Pass The Fire - Rainbow [Children Of Babylon OST]
Pass the herbs. Chilled laid back roots music a bit like some early Lee Scratch Perry Black Art. This tune is from a film soundtrack which features a sublime tune of the title by The Mighty Diamonds, one for another mix I think. The film was made in 1980 and was directed by Lennie Little-White and I have never been able to see it yet. I must track it down. Managed to pick this up when I was about 16 along with Bob Marley's Natty Dread and All Mighty's Chapter 3 lps. A time when I thought maybe I give this thing called "reggae" ago. Tom Ze - Hein - Warner Bros [The best Of Tom Ze]
This was a gamble when it came out in 1990 thought it looked very interesting. Have to say I didn't gel with the lp at first but came to like the lp and was a great introduction to Tom Ze music. I like the vibe of Hein.

Semuta - La Fayette - Whatmusic [Semuta]
A British Jazz band. This lp came out on Lee Lambert Records and is pretty mega rare but luckily Whatmusic released it and I picked it up when they did their mega cheap sale and got it for a silly price of £2. Were they from Manchester? I think so. Not sure if the name Semuta came from the name of a drug in Frank Herbert' Dude book. If so what a mad name as it is quoted as meaning - A combination of a specific drug and music, which penetrated to the deepest levels of consciousness. I have some of that please hehe. This tune should be a jazz dance classic, maybe it was and I missed it, I hope so.

Doug Lang - Poem
I don't know much or can find much about Doug Lang's poetry. I came across a youtube link entitled Jazz Poems and had to click it. Right up my street, in the style of the beatnik cats like Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs and Jack Kerouac. Here's the link to the youtube which might of been uploaded by Doug himself. Chick Corea - Leprechaun's Dream - Polydor [The Leprechaun]
Keyboard wizard and composer was a massive part of the electric jazz fusion movement which can about in the mid 70's and formed the group Return To Forever. I've always thought of this solo outing being really business as normal on a RTF trip. I think it's a little underrated. I like the lp a lot and having said that I cut this tune down in size a bit as I thought it was too long for the mix but please check the whole journey of the Leprechaun Dream out as it is well worth the trip.

Niagara - Terra Inconita - UA [S.U.B]
German drum and percussion band Niagara certainly know a thing or two about creating a pulsing rhythm and I love the way this track starts and drives along. I'm very pleased how it mixed in with Chick's tune. They recorded 3 lp's I believe and this one is from the lp called SUB which was recorded in 1972. A very talented band and worth digging deeper for.

Lincoln Chase - The Human Game - Paramount Records [Lincoln Chase 'n You]
Laid backed pyschodelic vocal jazz almost poetry from Lincoln Chase. Check the cover with his big smiley face on, never fails to make me smile back . An enjoyable lp through-out I think but this one has always been my favourite. Sadly I think he died young and only recorded two solo projects. he did however do a lot of work with producing and writing for groups like The Drifters and Gladys Knight and the Pips and even a few for believe it or not Elvis Presley.

Dory Previn - Angels And Devils The Following Day - UA [Mythical Kings And Iguanas]
Weird one this, I've had it for years and got it for 50p from a car booty and have always gone back to it hoping I would like it more. Dragged it out a few weeks back to have another go and came across this tune. I failed to notice it before. It's grown on me. It's a bit dark but I'm taken by the synths and way she says the words in a different take to what you think is going to come. Do all women prefer bastards? I don't know.... What I love most though is the title of the lp which I think is just great and she looks like Cleo Laine. I don't get on much with the rest of the lp, what about her other recordings? anything of interest please let me know.

Hubert Eaves - Call To Awareness - Inner City records [Esoteric Funk]
Now this is some serious deep deep deeeeeeep shit. My friend Jaycee picked this gem up when we were teenagers from a secondhand shop in Kinson Poole called Uncle Barry's, which thinking about it now sounds like someone who would give sweets to children, but anyhow it was a weird shop but he got this incredible record from there for like 10p. It didn't have a cover but that didn't matter as it was on this amazing label called Inner City , great name. When we first heard Call to Awareness we were just floored and blown away. It's almost too good. Later we went on the find that the whole project is incredible and every tune a winner. I luckily picked up a copy about 15 years ago and is up there with some of my favourite records. An essential purchase. If you not got it please get it now.

Shawn Phillips - Jam for the world [World In Action Theme]
Hey it's the World In Action theme. Massive nostalgia for anyone of a certain age. Seems like there's a lot of beef between Shawn and another guy whom seems to have taken all the credit for the tune and according to Shawn made a fair few bucks out of it. Shame it's got bad vibes connected to it but it's still one hell of a tune.

Zomby - Witch Hunt - 4AD [Dedication]
Loving the stuff Zomby are pulling out. Techno based dubstep. I fell in love with this tune as soon as I heard it. Check out the lp Dedication. Mr Cloudy - Lonely - ZeECc [Recluse]
Wasn't bought by the name to be hones,t sounds like a birthday clowns name I would book for a kiddies party. He should of gone for his own name Sergey Barkalov which sounds much better. Anyway this dude makes some fine music and I absolutely love this tune. Big thanks to my friend Spreads for giving me the nod on this guys music. This has been overlaid with the Space Shuttle Discovery take off and trip into space with some wise words at the start from Stanley Kubrick from a vintage soundclip. Jim White - Still Waters - Luaka Bop [The Mysterious Tale Of How I Shouted Wrong-Eyed Jesus]
This tune was a surprise to me when I heard it a few months ago. Not something I would normally go for but this is beautiful creative music. Jim White is a Southern American singer songwriter and guitarist. Maybe could be described as alternative country but I feel goes off in experimental directions. Probably not this tune which is more of a folky relaxed pop cross country tune if that any sense hehe. Anyhow I was watching a documentary called "Searching For The Wrong Eyed Jesus", which by the way is absolutely amazing and I recommend you check it out, its a film based on his lp Wrong-Eyed Jesus (The Mysterious Tale of How I Shouted) and is an insightful, captivating and compelling look at the south of America with Jim travelling along meeting singers, performers and story tellers along the way. Scarlett Johanson - One Whole Hour - Rumor Mill Records [Wretches & Jabberers OST]
I don't normally go for the blonds but this girl is super sexy and yes I loved that pink pantie opening shot in Lost in Translation. I have to say I was pretty shocked when I heard she was in a band and had recorded a few songs but I left it there and hadn't heard any of her material until I came across the Documentary film Wretches And Jabberers which the soundtrack is full of folky, jazz and country style tunes, I haven't seen the film yet but it's on the to do list. Have heard the soundtrack is better than the film though . Anyway I was very impressed and fell in love with this tune "One Whole Hour" I hope she and the comp does well. Still my favorite film of hers is the 2001 comedy drama Ghost World directed by Terry Zwigoff, who incidentally did the wicked little doc Crumb, and also starring Thora Birch and the ever brilliant Steve Buscemi, playing a guy obsessed with records I must add.

Jim O'Rourke & Haruomi Hosono - Close To You - AWDR [All Kinds Of People: Love Burt Bacharach]
Right this is American musician and record producer Jim O'Rourke tribute to Burt Bacharach. Getting friends to jam long with him doing alternative takes on different Burt tunes. "Close To You" has always had a special place in my heart as I always sang it to my kids when they were babies and to their annoyance still nowadays sometimes. So I was a little worried what might happen to this tune and was slightly concerned it would be turned into a soft smooth jazz version but I was happily surprised it got a very good jazz take rework. And what a choice getting none other than Haruomi Hosono from Yellow Magic Orchestra to do the vocals. I'm very impressed and it really gets it's groove on with some brilliant drumming from a guy called Glenn Kotche. This lp was recorded in Japan in 2010 and is a great tribute to a fantastic composer. http://www.dragcity.com/artists/jim-orourke

Captain Sky - Let Me Come Inside - TEC Records [Concerned Party # 1]
Sublime soul from bass player and P-Funk style slap bass funk guru Captain Sky. He can turn his hand from the space bass to super slick soul at a turn of a hat. Love this tune from his 3rd lp Concerned Party # 1 which also has another equally sweet soul tune entitled Trace of Love. Awesome heavy weight card gatefold album with bubble gum style art work.

Christine Mcvie - And That's saying A Lot - Sire Records [The Legendary Christine Perfect Album]
Great pieces of music from the very talented keyboardist and songwriter Christine Mcvie on this solo outing lp entitled with her original name Christine Perfect. She went off to join British/American rock band Fleetwood Mac. This lp was recorded in 1976 and also features the great tune "No Road Is The Right Road". Well worth tracking down.

Larry Carlton - Wavin and Smilin - Blue Thumb Records [Singing / Playing]
I love this happy and relaxed laid back tune from guitar player Larry. Is it the only album recording he did sing on? I think so. Let me know if he did again. I do think this one is the best on the lp not that fussed by the others but I like the funky happy vibe with a slight southern twang. This was recorded in 1973. Larry was a regular jamming with The Crusaders.

Michael Urbaniak - Afterglow - Arista [Body English]
Only a short in the back ground chat over tune this time from Michael Urbaniak from his 1976 Body English lp which features the sublime and must hear tune "Satin Lady". Polish born Michael Urbaniak has always been my favourite Violin player ever since I picked up the incredible "Fusion" lp which he recorded in 1973 on the CBS label. A lucky gamble I picked up in my teens and I still listen to it when ever I get the chance. Recently played the organ and violin psychedelic tune "Seresta" at the Brighton FYE.

Carmen Lundy - You're Not in Love - JVC [Old Devil Moon]
Ooooh how I love Carmen's voice. Has to be up there with one of the best in the business for sure. I can't remember if it was Ralph Tee or Bob Jones who I heard drop this first on thier radio shows but who ever it was I was totally blown away. Stunning incredible and breathtaking beautiful. Some time around 97/98 I was upstairs in one of the top rooms of the 333 club when a random dj spun it and I couldn't believe I was hearing it on a club sound system. I wish I could remember the dj's name as we chatted about it for sometime. Her first record Good Morning Kiss is one of my treasured records. The Dramatics - In The Rain - Volt [Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get]
Detroit soul vocal group The Dramatics where first known as the Dynamics and I read they got changed by a spelling mistake on a one of their record labels and decided to keep with the change. "In The Rain" was a massive hit for them and what a stunning tune it is. Available very cheap on a 7" and well worth adding to your collection. Reached the number one spot in 1972 in the R&B chart.

Richard Davis - I Still Love You, Baby - Galaxy [Fancy Free]
The American jazz bassist has had an amazing career working with loads of the top musicians in their game from the likes of Elvin Jones, Sun Ra, Archie Shepp, Oliver Nelson to name but a few. Known for his take on the free spiritual jazz side of things. The tune I have picked for this months show is from one his later recordings and features the vocals of Dolly Hirota and has Billy Cobham taking it mellow on the drums and Stanley Cowell on keyboard duties.

Haruomi Hosono - Puriosheene [Hosono Box 1969-2000]
One part of the trio from pioneering electronic music band Yellow Magic Orchestra. Haruomi has been turning out fantastic electronic new wave synthpop for years. I believe this tune has only been released on the Box set which features loads of unreleased material. I absolutely love this tune. Electronic Japanese greatness.

Ace and The Sandman - Let Your Body Talk - Saber Records 12"
The best ever acid based house tune? It is for me. Blinding soulful deep house mixed so well with lush acid synth noises. I think this tune is perfect in every way. From the guys who bought us Virgo this is quality music. It's been re-released by the label Rush Hour.

Intro - The Six Million Dollar Man
70's nostalgia courtesy of the Six Million Dollar Man. Lee Majors played the iconic astronaut Steve Austin who became Bionic. Remember having his doll as a kid and he used to run around with a gang of my action men along with Eagle Eyes in my back garden beating up the bad guys. The series went on for quite a while spawning the Bionic Woman. Did they have a bionic baby? Probably LOL. I do remember Steve Austin getting a rather camp moustache in the later series, what was that all about. Anyway this theme tune was composed by known other than jazz saxophonist Oliver Nelson. Great little score.

Earforce Band - Song of the Universe - UBM Records [Sky Racer]
Another tune from this German group. This is a real mellow mood piece that only goes on for a few minutes and I chat over! sorry about that.

Paul Jackson - Umi Bozu - Eastworld [Black Octopus]
Original headhunter bass player. Hugely talented guy. Was this his only solo project? Let me know please. Has that great Head Hunter sound which isn't surprising as most if not all the gang are involved in the project. The original lp is very hard to get hold off and I believe only released in Japan but luckily it did get a re-issue which is where I have got this from.

Brother Jack McDuff - Jelly Jam - Cadet [Getting Our Thing Together]
Brother Jack McDuff was a fantastic jazz organist who bought out tons of recordings. Low down dirty grinding organ riffs were a pretty good trademark for this Don. Did some pretty amazing soul jazz tunes later on in his recording life as well. This Jelly Jam track I have chosen for this mix has a very 60's telly soundtrack feel to it, heavy funky drums and very groovy. A perfect track to be walking the jive too down the road. Was it used for something? Maybe.

Buddy Rich Jerry Lewis - Bongos
Just a little sound clip but a funny one from a Jerry Lewis film called "Visit To A Small Planet" were he plays an Alien visiting Earth. The clip is from a part in the movie set in a jazz club where Buddy Rich is playing and he tries to get him up on stage but Jerry Lewis stays seated and plays the bongos with his mind powers. Jerry Lewis is actually a very good drummer and when he had his own show he got Buddy Rich on and they have a brilliant and very funny drum battle together. Tommy T - The Eighth Wonder - Easy Star Records [The Prester John Sessions]
Sublime piece of jazz music from Tommy T and his band. I have to give a props and a big shout to Shane Schaetz for getting me on to this great lp and this wonderful piece of music called Eighth Wonder. Cheers bro. This I believe is the best tune on the lp but there are some other really nice touches through-out the whole recording. "Brothers" is on the same great vibe and "Eden" is a beautiful dubby mellow piece of chilled sounds. A very recommended lp. Check it.

Denym - Beauty - Ocult 7"
Just a MP3 of these little gem affaid. One day I will have it though. I really love it. I bought some tunes from a guy on Discogs last year and noticed he had this tune. Unfortunately for me it was way out of my price range at £60 and me having a pretty strict code of only pay up to £5 for a 7" I was a little short off the mark. But like me the guy didn't know much about the tune apart from it being a great piece of British soul music. You can guess that they must of been a reggae band esp as the flip side it called Selassie Hi. Bit of a give a way and I now know they did another tune called "Why boy" on Real Wax recordings. If you have any info on this band please let me know and I can pass the information on. Step forward Snoopy and Weegee I do so recognize the singer though I'm sure it will be someone classic. Juliet Roberts? I know it's not but it's got to be someone like her. By the way check the guys website www.medinarecords.com/ he has some great stuff.

Trentemoller - The Forest - Out Of Orbit 12"
Danish Trentemoller has a great gift of making chilled out techno electronica. One of my favourites of his is this one called The Forest. Feels to me like a moving journey through some futurist landscape, dark but uplifting at the same time. Great headphone music. www.anderstrentemoller.com

Conquest - Never Alone - Music Store 7"
A mega rare 7" inch this one. Not sure why exactly, yeh its amazing soul music and sounds so sweet but there are a lot of similar soul tunes which aren't over a hundred pounds. Must be because it's on a private press and on a web search doesn't look to be on any compilations that I can see. Love the spacey beginning. Sit back and enjoy.

Yusef Lateef - Passacaglia - Atlantic [Suite 16]
Tenor Sax and flute master Yusef Lateef recorded the sublime and incredible album Eastern Sounds which features the intense bliss and lush Love Theme from Spartacus, an absolute stunning piece of music and a wonderful lp through-out. The tune for this mix is from his 1970 Atlantic lp called Suite 16 not his greatness recording I think but hidden away on side 2 between the monster 7 part movement piece is the short but very deep and moody tune entitled the Fourth Movement - Passacaglia. Great stuff even if it is so short.

Nino Ferrer - Moses - CBS [Nino and Radiah]
Crazy cover on this one. Hobo or maybe folky farmer looking Nino standing in a garden with Radiah loving leaning on his shoulder, nothing strange about that you say but she happens to be total naked and rather bloody gorgeous. Nino Ferrer is famous for trying lots of different styles on recordings from Jazz to Rhythm and Blues to rock to more traditional french music. The Nino And Radiah lp is a more folky affair with some added funk which can be heard in the track I have chosen for the mix "Moses". Incidental my dogs name. A very good lp, check these two mellow and excellent tunes too "The Garden and Looking For You".

Aalon - Summer Love - Arista [Cream City]
Aalon was an American soul group from Los Angeles formed by lead singer and guitarist Aalon Butler. Amazing detailed artwork on the cover by an artist called Thomas Warkentin who I see went on and did work on Star Trek comics at the end of the 70's. This lp is a cheapy to pick up and a good record to have in your collection. I like Summer Love the most but I have a soft spot for the catchy and groovy "Rock N Roll Gangster". This was recorded in 1977.

Embryo - Side track - Buk Records [Surfin]
Now I made a complete boo boo on this on the show and said I thought they might be from the UK which I honestly thought they where. It definitely sounds It I think but no it's an excellent German group which should of given away the game for it was recorded at BASF and every musician has a German name. DOH! sorry bout that. Plus I have a second apology to make also as I cut the track by about one and a half minutes from the end as it goes off on one a little, with a mad axe man guitar riff frenzy. Didn't think it fitted in with the mix so I cut it. Anyhow now I know that Embryo came out of Munich and embarrassingly for me are quoted on Wikipedia to be "one of the most important German jazz-rock bands during the 1970s" and not from the UK LOL I see that they are still recording today which is excellent news and I have a massive back catalogue to go through which I am very much looking forward to doing. Louis and Bebe Barron - Robby, The Cook and 60 gallons of booze - Poppydisc [Forbidden Planet]
Just a very tiny little snip it in the background from the super sci fi classic Forbidden Planet. Not only did it have ground breaking effects but very early electronic music courtesy of Louis and Bebe Barron. A fine film and a firm favourite of mine. I do think the soundtrack of this lp works best for your enjoyment when your actually watching the film. Which starred none other than Frank Drebin himself Leslie Nielsen.

Catalyst - Suite for Albeniz - Muse Records [A Tear and a Smile]
Wow this is grooving and very funky journey though many styles of music. It's got eastern sounds a very classical vibe and bizarrely an almost medieval feel at times! or is that just me. A masterful group of musician who effortlessly work throughout the whole piece keeping you hooked wanting more and more, none so than when it breaks down to the solo of the violin and the funky beats and bass pick up again. Wonderful.

Derrick Harriott and The Chariot Riders - Float On - Crystal Records 7"
This is a very credible cover version of the Floaters classic Float On. I really like the way the skank has managed to work, I really can't see how it does but yeh it really does work. What cracks me up the most though if the fact that Derrick adds him self into the line up at the beginning and carries on singing all 4 of the vocals and star signs. Now I have no problem with this but, but no one can do Larry but Larry. Larry was always my favourite you see.

Michael Caine has always been one of my favourite actors and I have adored so many of his films thought-out the years. The Ipcress Files hit the spot for me when after being a very passionate fan of Patrick McGoohan series The Prisoner, I was taken in by Harry Palmer who I felt was very similar to Number 6. No more so than the end drugs and mind control section at the end of the film. Loved the music associated with a lot of his films especaily as Roy Budd had a big hand in a lot of the scores. So it seemed apt that doing a little Caine section would involve quite few films which they work together on. As I was looking for his music I remembered how amazing the soundtrack to "Who Dares Wins" was so had to add that as well. So yes it went off on one but I feel it's a pretty enjoyable 20 or so minutes. It's not just music from films, I've added some film trailers in there too. Get Carter had a massive impacted on me when I first saw it and consequently watched it over and over again for months. It was something so raw about his whole performance that grabbed me. It was relentless but felt so real. The music was stunning and went so well with the dark edgy mood of film. No can say "Crap House" with so much venom than Jack Carter. Other Caine films I love but didn't add on the mix as the soundtracks didnt fit in are the underated and not much seen "Pulp" the wonderful epic "The Man Who Would Be King" and I do have a soft spot for "Gambit". Just to make things a bit difficult the connection goes off on one but they are all slightly connected somehow. There's a tune from Caines other Harry Palmer film "The Billion Dollar Brain" plus a little bit of music from "The Ipcress Files" which was done by John Barry and the Roy Budd soundtrack "Who Dares Wins" which has nothing to do with Caine but is a film about the SAS which started Edward Woodward and Lewis Collins. So yes it's a strange mix but an enjoyable one I must add.

Ethos - Sedona - Capitol Records [Open Up]
I don't know much about this group other than I think they are out of LA and are a little influenced by the hippy scene. None more so than "Sedona" which is a floaty down with the fairies kind of tune and to be honest it's rather cheesy but I love it's mellow almost boat ride down a flowing stream filled with flowers vibe to it.

Gary Burton - Las Vegas Tango - Atlantic [Good Vibes]
Wow this guy has got some serious talent. This tune is filled with a tripped out folky jazz vibe which is like taking a journey through-out the streets of seventies America. Burton recorded a ton of records all class recordings with his trade mark sublime vibraphone skills.

Swayzak - Then There's her - Studio! K7 [Loops From The Bergerie]
Put on to Swayzak by my good friend Jaycee. Instantly hooked on this tune. Had to go out and buy the double album vinyl pack straight away. Looking forward to it being a mix of some of the finest Deep dub tech house sounds when it arrives. I don't know their other releases but need to get myself up to speed. Recommend me some please. Aswad - Hulet - Island Records [Hulet]
Aswad have been jamming since around 1975. A classic part of our reggae movement history. This lp and track named Hulet was recorded in 1979 and is a very mellow piece of jazz reggae. George Oban was part of the band in the early days and I wonder if his influence was captured in this brilliant tune. One of those sit back and chill with a cold beer and let the good vibes roll over you tune. A perfect mix of reggae and jazz.

Wonderful show from the fine fellow and music finding legend Mr Trunk. When your there grab the Nick Berry and the Garth Marenghi specials too as both are brilliant. Wait just grab everything you can as its a great journey through sound connected to film scores and library pieces. Any how Delia Derbyshire was one of the queens of the BBC Radiophonic Library sound with her and many friends left to experiment with different sound techniques. Most of which hadn't ever been tried before. Cutting and splicing sounds together like the original loop da loop specialists. Creating sounds for all manner of BBC television series like Doctor Who. The White Noise album was an experimental electronic music group between herself and American-born David Vorhaus around 1968. Syreeta and G C Cameron - Station Break For Love - Motown [Rich Love, Poor Love]
Sweet sweet soul from Syreeta and G C Cameron and they make a great duo. Some lush strings start of this growing tune that ends in a big vocal show down of telling it like it is. Syreeta done some beautiful tunes in her career with work with Stevie Wonder and Billy Preston. G C Cameron was one time lead singer with the Spinners and also went on to sing with the Temptations later on in his career. This lp is from 1977 and I think this is the best tune on the lp hidden away at the end of side one but the title tune is very good also. A cheapy lp to pick up but very much worth having in your Syreeta collection.

Dimenzio - Bamba - Pepita [Dimenzio]
I love this tune from what I guess from research is an Hungarian prog jazz outfit. Bamba is a very electronic brazilian jazz style tune. I haven't got the lp but had the tune on the compilation "The Spinning Wheel of Jazz Vol 2" but looking around looks like you could be lucky to pick the original record up for no more that £15 if you dig around a bit. It's gone straight on my wants list and as soon as I can afford it I hope to add it to the collection. If this track is any thing to go by it's got to be an essential purchase.

Nile Rodgers - Stay Out Of The Light - Warner Bros [B-movie Matinee]
I did wonder if I should add this track or not! not because I don't like, I love it but was sure it woundn't of fitted but hey I'm game and try to get it working at the end. I think it does work? Its quirky and comic in places but when the electric groove gets going you just can't help but nod you head and tap your feet to the beat. A cross between electro, soul, funk and boogie, Nile captures a great 80's sound where he sings and jams along with his guitar. The crazy looking cover picture is in fact a 3D image that if you have the old school red and green 3D glasses give it a try as it works pretty good.

David Lynch - Good Day Today - Sunday Best MP3
Yes this really is The David Lynch. I was sent this by a friend a few months back and was shocked to when it first started that it wasn't some kind of Blue Grass tune or mellow mood piece which I would of expected from Mr Lynch but no it's a blooming house inspired tune. At first it's kind of a little cheesy and pretty poppy but as soon as it finished I put it staright back on. After that second listen it really did grow on me and to be honest any chance I get to listen to it I do. I love it. David Lynch is no stranger to music though as I knew he had penned a lot of tunes for his film sound tracks going right back to Eraserhead but I'm sure he has had a very big impact on most if not all of his film's. Battlestar Galactica - Opening Theme
Old school space happens. I so enjoyed this space saga of day to day survival of Apollo and Starbuck under the leadership of Commander Adama. Fighting the Cylons and searching for the mysterious lost and unknown where abouts of the 13th planet called Earth. The soundtrack stuck with me and every one of a certain age too I would well imagine. Stu Phillips was the conductor and arranger on this classic score.

Introduction - The Invaders
A Quinn Martin Production, I always remember those words in the introduction of this wonderful late 60's science fiction series which I used to watch religiously on reruns shown on BBC2. Used to be my favourite thing coming home from work sitting with my dinner and massive cup of tea and watch the adventures of David Vincent trying to prove to the world that there is a secret alien invasion underway. It had a very underlying theme of paranoia that often appeared to reflect the Cold War era. I use to read the books as well. I was definitely obsessed by this series.

The Nite-Liters - Serenade For a Jive Turkey - RCA Records [The Nite-Liters]
I'm pretty sure most of these cats went on to be New Birth. Think there was about 11 or 12 members in the band maybe more and they recorded 5 lps under The Nite-Liters. Why they are singing a Serenade For a Jive Turkey is anyone guess but I sure do love it. Love that mental loud screaming beginning also.

Words from Eddie Harris
Eddie Harris is a funny fellow, not content with writing one of jazz's most famous standards Freedom Jazz Dance and the catchy Listen Here and many other jazz and funky classics. He decides to go off and do a comedy LP. There is some very funny moments in this recording and I had to included the bit where he tells you how to dance after puffing some weed. There are a few pieces of music which he jams for the crowd but they are very short and only the last one is probably the best which I play later on.

Bobby Hutcherson - Rain Every Thursday - Bluenote [Natural Illusions]
Bobby Hutcherson is a jazz vibraphone and marimba player who has a wonderful free flowing style to his playing. A very brilliant record with a very lay backed vibe to it. Not unlike some Chess recordings from Charles Stepney. Check also "The Thrill is gone". This lp features the drum skills of Jack DeJohnette and is arranged by Wade Marcus. I believe Jazzanova sampled it in a section of their tune LOVE and You and I.

Raices - Karmanalia - Nemperor Records [Raices]
An essential purchase this lp. A real all firing guns a blazing Fusion, Batucada, Latin Jazz treat. My friend had it for years and I always wanted to get a copy. Then this year on a family trip to Rotterdam Holland I managed to get a copy at last and at 5 euros I was a very happy man. Lovely piece of artwork on the cover design, you could stick that up on your wall. The whole lp is brilliant and another track or two will no doubt be featuring on a future show.

Felt - Now She's Gone - Nasco [Felt]
A mega rare American progressive psych lp that I can only dream about having in my record collection. I love everything about this tune the drumming the singing the whole darn vibe is so exciting. Have to settle for a MP3 of this as it goes for around the £300+ quid when it pops up. I believe it got a reissue around 2000 on Akarma record label. Still don't see any of these around either. Boohoo.

Gary Wilson - Dream(s) - Motel Records [Forgotten Lovers]
Now what the hell can you say about this guy? This tune was first released on a private press I believe in or around 1971 with the tune Soul Traveler on the flip side. This guy has some much talent and this tune is up there with some of the best jazz to come out of that era and he's not really even a bloody jazz artist LOL. I get the impression that pretty much after a few recordings he went into exile in his parents house and just sat back and got recording at his own pace. His music has always been of an experimental nature going through electronic and New Wave to quirky pop tunes. He goes pretty wacky and all out there at times just check his videos on youtube. When your there check "Gary's In The Park" brilliant. Jeff Phelps - Wrong Space Wrong Time - Engineered For Sound [Magnetic Eyes]
Another Private Press gem this time from Jeff Phelps. Very rare and expensive to get hold of the original but lucky for me Tomlab have reissued this super electronic abstract soul nugget. And a grand job they have done too, lovingly recreating the lp with restored and remastered sound the wonderful artwork and a lovely little insert picture of Mr Phelps and his lady friend who I guess is the vocalist Antoinette Marie Pugh. Jeff pretty much does everything on this cult soul masterpiece. Really didn't know which tune to pick and could of gone for any number of tunes. This lp has been pushed and supported by Nite Jewel and Dam-Funk.

Chocolate Jam Co - Suite Chocolate - Epic [The Spread of the Future]
Lots of sweet soul tunes on this lp produced by Leon Ndugu Chancler but wanted a little string interlude so went for this lush piece.

Nina Simone - Suzanne - RCA Victor [To Love Somebody]
How incredible is this woman! Such an awe and formidable body of work and just the most unique and emotionally charged voice. To many classic tunes to choice from but this, her cover of the Leonard Cohen original, is a great piece of head nodding folk music which I heard for the 1st time a few months ago and just couldn't stop playing it. Hope you enjoy this as much as I did. A special lady.

Brenda Ray - Dreamin - Wambesi 7"
I wish I knew more about this lady of roots. A very different and original style. She plays the Melodica and sings in a very seductive manner a bit like Sylvia Robinson. I've only got the 7" but need to get my hands on the LP called Walatta which has this tune on and I believe was recorded around 1979.

Cleveland Eaton - Day Dreaming - Gamble [Half and Half]
Bassist who was part of The Ramsey Lewis Trio but he's played with just about every big name jazz artist through-out his career. This is from his 1st solo recording entitled Half and Half and is a cover version of the Aretha Franklin's tune which came out the year before this in 1972. It's a different and great version but your be hard pressed to beat her original but I thought it has got enough of a different edge to it and is maybe not that well known. Check out the crazy cover art work, WTF!! a fly bull with a human face.

Capricorn One Film Words from the trailer.
I love this film so much. Always a sucker for conspiracy films and what better subject than a Mars landing. I love space stuff and I do believe they went to the moon but 70's films, conspiracy, paranoia and space is always gonna excite me. Add some rockets and Russians and I'm a made man. The film starred Elliott Gould as the journalist, James Brolin as the leader of the Astronauts and it's even got Telly Savalas what more could you want. I've overlay the trailer with the John Beltran tune and I reckon it work pretty good. I was happy with that.

John Beltran - Collage of Dreams - Peacefrog [Ten Days Of Blue]
Super mellow bliss ambient techno. Went for the shorter version which I thought fitted better with the Capricorn One trailer. Read somewhere that this tune got used on the series Six Feet Under, I have watched the series and don't remember it but I can well image it was.

Devonwho - Actriz (Krystal Klears's Woogie Mix) - Klipmode [Funraiser Vol 1]
Great twisted up new future beats coming from this Portland based tune maker. Brilliant lp which was offered up free to download on bandcamp. I like the whole projects work but this Krystal Klear mix really good my taste buds going ) When I first heard I reckon I listened to it 20+ times in a row. Marlena Shaw - Prelude For Rose Marie - Bluenote [Who Is This Bitch, Anyway?]
Only 2 minutes of this beauty strings and things tune but well worth every second. Sorry for talking over it. What a title for an album hey!

Kevin Ayers - Song For Insane Times - Harvest [Joy of a toy]
Starting off my little Soft Machine connection section of the show I've included Kevin Ayers tune Song For the Insane. Check the lyrics out they truly are insane. Wonderful way with his words how he rhymes and sways through the notes and lyrics effortlessly. Absolutely gorgeous tune. His debut lp from 1969 and a lovely piece of Psychedelic Rock.

Daevid Allen - Only Make Love If You Want To - Affinity [Now Is The Happiest Time Of Your Life]
Melbourne born Daevid was probably the more hippy member of the group but that is saying a lot when you had quite an interesting band of people. Was also part of Gong. I love the sweet nature of this song but had a hard time choosing which tune to include on this mix. Really I wanted to go for the great trip of "Tally & Orlando Meet The Cockpot Pixie" but decided the "Make love if" fitted better and is not as "well out there" as that one.

Robert Wyatt - Just As You Are - Domino Records [Comicopera]
One of the founding members of the Canterbury Scene Soft Machine along with Mike Ratledge (who I would of included in this Soft machine connection but I don't think he ever did any solo projects, please correct me if I'm wrong). I fell in love with Roberts charm and sweet honest songwriting and singing. He just seems to do everything so perfect. As I say on the mix I would love to sit down and have a cup of tea and a few biscuits with his guy and he can waffle on for hours about his life and knowledge. Would be a fantastic day. There is a documentary about him which if you can track it down is an essential watch. By the way Paul Weller plays the guitar on this tune and features the voice of Monica Vasconcelos and believe it or not was released in 2007 sounds so much older I think.

Eddie Harris - Brother Soul - Atlantic [The Reason Why I'm Talking Shit]
From his comedy album this one of probably 3 music tunes from the lp when he and the band start jamming. Great tune with his electric sax in motion. Paul Humphreys plays the drums. Way too short though.

Joe Thomas - Soul Sermon - Groove Merchant [Joy of Cookin]
I do like funky flautist and try to include a few on this mixes. Joe Thomas carved out a career huffing and puffing over strong back beats during the 70s. recorded for 3 main labels 1st Today records then on to Groove Merchant and then Lester Radio Corporation. I do admire Joe's style and have most of his recordings. Good old fashion funky flute jazz.

Dave Liebman - Goli Dance - EMC [Drum Ode]
Fantastic lp from Dave Liebman, well worth taking down. I have only gone for the 30 second dedication to the drummers today and overlaided it over the Legrand tune. More another time for sure.

Michel Legrand - Un homme est mort - Vadim Music/Bell records 7"
A funk bomb theme from France's uber talented conductor and composer Michel Legrand. If the film is anything like this funky masterpiece then I have to see as soon as. Havent a clue what the film is like or is about to be honest but if it anything like this organ grinding groover its good be good hey. This was reissued on a limited edition 7" and can only imagine the original goes for silly money.

Urszula Dudziak - Midnight Rain - Arista [Midnight Rain]
Urszula work and was married to one of my favourite artists Michal Urbaniak making them the dream team for me. She is a Polish born jazz vocalist famous for her crazy array of scatting and improvised vocal work. Any from screaming groaning skibbing skeebing and doobing. Love it. Midnight Rain however has quite a few tracks where she sings in English and this being one of them. But she still has her track mark style through-out the lp.

Caldera - Ancient Source - Capitol Record [Sky Islands]
Caldera where an American band, that fused jazz, funk, rock and a whole heap of fusion with a wide variety of Latin music. Think they recorded 4 lps for Capitol Records and all feature at least 2 great tunes. Plus they had some gorgeous artwork on the covers too. I'm always going to be bought by bliss synthesizers and lush ladies singing sweet harmonies. Unless that's a man with a very high pitched voice. hehe

Bernie Worrell - Hold On - Arista [All the woo in the world]
Space cadet and Parliament Funkadelic wizard did this debut solo lp for Arista records. You don't really hear the P-funk style in this lovely mellow laid back goodie from the album but check the "Insurance Man For Funk" if you need your P-Funk fix. He played the piano, keyboards and organ and made a lot of the bands distinctive riffs with a Minimoog synthesizer. A very talented artist.

The Main Ingredient - Girl Blue - RCA Victor [Afrodisiac]
Super cover photo artwork with the lovely lady watching and chatting to the group on skype. LOL. Recorded in 1973. The Main Ingredient featured Cuba Gooding Jr Dad as one of the groups vocalist. They turned out quite a sizable body of work with an lp a year from 1970 to 80.

Cerrone - The Loft - Malligator [Brigade Mondaine]
A truly before it's time record I believe. Very dark techie sounds especially on the b-side. But the whole is a very good and diverse mix of tunes with some good driving disco beats. What on earth the film is like is anyone's guess, I'm guessing Brigade Mondaine is the detective working on Vice Squad but I could be completely wrong. Please let me know if you have any info on it. Went for the Loft tune mainly so I could talk over it as it's a drifty mellow almost hippy piece. Cerrone did another sound track called Vaudou Aux Caraïbes which is again a very different mix of tracks with a good selection of original sounding electronic and disco tunes.

Brian Auger and The Trinity - Far Horizon - ATCO records [Definitely What!]
Brilliant 60's artwork on this I believe 1st album recording for Brian Auger and his band. Far Horizon is up there with my favourites of his. I know the singing is pretty bad hehe and it's quite out of tune and all that but it has heaps of quirky charm and I just can't quite get enough of it. Is it Brian singing? I don't know. Reckon it is though.

Cal Tjader - Solar Heat - Skye Records [Solar Heat]
Mate this tune is BOSS. My friend Jaycee had this for years and I had always loved this album title tune. Arranged by Gary Mcfarland on his part owned label. It's all about the the reverb on the vibes at the beginning and with the top rated drumming (Grady Tate?) and the sublime percussion touches makes this a classic tune. Check out the solar hot cover graphics.

Fresh Start - So Much Pain - ABC Records [What America Needs]
I don't know jack about this prog rock funky but pretty depressing tune. Any info please help me out. Cheers )

Barrabas - Lady Love - ATCO Records [High Jack]
Spainish jazz rock and latin infused band. Amazing piece of art on the cover of this lp which features the band stuck behind a gate in the mind of some screaming flying baldy man, not me by the way. The lp was originally released in Spain under the name "Soltad a Barrabas" but then got renamed Hi-Jack for it's overseas market. A very nice relaxed chilled sweet tune for your lady love.

Merl Saunders - Charisma (She's got) - Fantasy [Fire Up]
A bluesy affair this tune from keyboardist Merl. I brought this lp recently so to able to play out funky Chock-lite Puddin at a recent fye gig in Brighton. Noticed this on the lp and have been liking it. Not sure I'm totally into this one but I like it more when the vocals arrive about halfway through. He recorded quite a few records for Fantasy records but you don't often see them about.

When Saints Go Machine - Fail Forward (Nicolas Jaar Remix) - Studio K7 MP3
Was giving this MP3 by a friend and I fell in love with it. Went off and have been check there other material which I really like. From Copenhagen, Denmark. Not my usual style but it feels right to be on here and it's a great remix from Nicolas Jaar. The Black Hole Ending Outro
This film will always have a big place in my heart. It's got robots, space and black holes. Gets a bit of a diss at times but I really don't see why. Disney goes pretty dark with this one, maybe that was why I don't know. Bobby has to be my favorite, poor old broken timer Bobby. At least he gets to meet a friend in Vincent. Great cast of actors from Robert Forster, Anthony Perkins, Ernest Borgnine and the brilliant casted Maximilian Schellas as Dr. Hans Reinhardt who created the rather naughty robot killing machine Maximilian. What happens at the end? Heaven and Hell did they get through the black hole or manage to e=get out the other side? Lush soundtrack conducted and composed by the late great John Barry.

I do have great difficulty doing the chat track but as I record it I try my best to do it first time to be as live sounding as I can best hope to get and it would probably be filled with moments like this if I ever did it real live so it's for the best I don't LOL.

Well I like starting off with some nostalgia from my youth. This was a great cartoon. Was ahead of the game with mixed race super heroes. You had Hercules who had super human strength with his blond locks, Mercury who was of Asian decent, who could run and fly at the speed of light and Astrea an African American who could morph into any living animal and was pretty sexy too.

Larisa Dolina and Al Jarreau - Wonder Where You Are - Private Press? [Hollywood Mood]
I found this a while back and intrigued by the fact that George Duke was on the production duties and that he was getting his keyboard out. Wasn't expecting much to be honest especially as it is from 2008 but seeing that Al Jarreau was on one of the tracks I thought it's got be worth a try. Was very pleasantly surprised by Wonder Where You Are. Definitely worth a listen and it just grows on you.

Blake Baxter - Late Night Interlude - Mix Records [Poetry and Rhythm Session Two]
Old school Techno king Blake Baxter does a nice little jazz poetry interlude. Felt a perfect fit in the mix from some of his jazz talk.

Tom Scott - The Honeysuckle Breeze - Impulse [The Honeysuckle Breeze]
Wonderful 1967 jazz tune from saxophonist Tom Scott. From his Impulse lp entitled "The Honeysuckle Breeze" from 1967. His debut lp? I think so but might be wrong. This tune has a great hippy jazz vibe to it. Sit back and nod to this.

Existentialism Explained [Shadows 1959]
A little clip from the John Cassavetes written and directed film called Shadows. An improvisation inspired film about interracial relations during the Beat Generation years in New York City. Love the whole feel of this independent film which was filmed at the tail end of the 50's.

If - Shadows and Echoes - Island Records [If 2]
Haha no coincidence that I put this tune straight after the before sound clip. From one Shadows straight into another. The band If where a progressive rock band formed in Britain and had a small body of work through from 1970 to 1975. The band featured Dick Morrissey who was a big jazz sax player in the 60's who later went on to be a big part of the Brit jazz funk scene. I adore this tune.

Caetano Veloso - Shoot Me Dead - Polygram [Caetano Veloso (A little more blue)]
My favourite from this excellent LP which he recorded in the UK when he was in exile from the Brazilian government for being out spoken with his views. I also like the quirky "Maria Bethania tune from the album.

Louis Haiman - The Question of You - fwdthought [Actualization]
Super deep Detroit business filled with much soul. An amazing piece of music where the whole lp is brilliant through-out.

James William Guercio - The Chase - United Artists Records [Electra Glide In Blue]
A classic cult film straight out of my top drawer of favourite films. Starring Robert Blake and the sized challenged motor cycle cop. Features one hell of chase, with a theme not dissimilar from Shaft in Africa, ironically called the Chase. Been after the soundtrack for some time and pick it up at a good price recently. "Lets go get him Dipper"

Earforce Band - XY Patrol - UBM Records [Sky Racer]
A German funky fusion band who recorded this album in 1982. My favourite from the lp but there is another super mellow tune on there which I can't remember the title of at the moment but will most probably get an airing on a future show. Think this might be their only record.

Kevin Moore - Speak Your Mind - Chocolate City [Rainmaker]
Great bluesy jazz funk number from Kevin Moore who later changed his name to Keb Mo and recorded a lot of soul inspired material for the Okeh label. I think Speak your mind is the best track on the lp but Rainmaker is pretty good and worth checking out.

The Impressions - Potent Love - Curtom [Times Have Changed]
Brilliant tune from this incredible band featuring no other than the man Curtis Mayfield. Nice version of Inner City Blues on here too. But it really is all about Potent Love. Crazy percussion and bliss intense strings, this tune is filled with almost too much emotion :)

Charles Wright - One Two Three Four Five Six - ABC Records, Dunhill [Doing What Comes Naturally]
Now he might not be the best singer in the world but man do I love his style, lazy, happy and heart felt soulful. This lp is a double vinyl gatefold with great photo art work on the outer and inner covers. Most famous for is work with The Watts 103rd St Rhythm Band and the classic "Express Yourself" but you can still find some real gems on his solo recordings.

Hugh Mundell - My Mind - Message [Africa Must Be Free By 1983]
Still upsets me to what other amazing songs he would be writing today if he had not of died so young. Wrote this lp with Augustus Pablo at the tender age of 16. "My Mind" has such thoughtful lyrics which anyone can relate to, when the mind just keeps thinking and going on and on. The LP is a classic and a must have in any collection whether your into reggae or not I believe. But he did do 5 lps in his short life which are always pulled of the shelves and placed on my deck whenever I get a chance. I do need to add his lp "Time and Place" to the collection on day, but it way out of my price range.

Mary McCreary - Butterflies in Heaven - Shelter Recording Company Inc [Butterflies In Heaven]
Mary's debut recording for Shelter records produced by DJ Rogers. The tune I have picked, the title track, has a spiritual roots soul feel and a big heap of folk vibes. Probably the best tune on the lp but way too short.

Space Dimension Controller - 2EZ (Autopilot's Lament) - R&S Records
I love this guys work, soul emotive music. Bit of techno, bit of house, tons of soul. Very talented producer. This tune is from his great Temporary Thrillz EP but also check his earlier release with the most brilliant entitled lp "Unidentified Flying Oscillator" and he's got a 12" on Royal Oak records too. Brian Auger's Oblivion Express - Thoughts From A Far - RCA Victor [Reinforcements]
Oh I love Brian Auger. But this lp of his was a new find for me and picked it up only a few months back. A sucker for gatefold records, I love the weight and feel of this lp. Lovely photo for the cover with all the band with there kids and love the knit wear on all those tank tops. Need one of them to go with my anorak :). A very cheap record to pick up and I was taken by "Thoughts from afar" straight away but the harder "Brain Damage" is an awesome tune. Pleased to have added this to my collection.

Focus - Soft Vanilla - Polydor [Mother Focus]
Layered back chilled instrumental music with electronic strings and little touches of flute from Dutch jazz rock band Focus. The band featured two big stars keyboardist and flutist Thijs van Leer, guitarist Jan Akkerman. Both went on to do big solo projects.

The Echocentrics - Jardim ft Lima - Ubiquity Records [Sunshadows]
Bloody excellent new debut lp from this multicultural band. Based in Austin Texas and featuring Argentinean singer Natalia Clavier and Brazil-based Tita Lima. Laid back, hippy, Brazilian, psychedelic-tinged sounds. Love it. http://echocentrics.tumblr.com/

The United States of America - Coming Down - CBS [The United States of America]
The United States of America was an American experimental rock and psychedelic band whose works are an example of early electronic music. They paved the way for many bands with their unique style. Instead of a lead guitarist they used synthesizers, and various audio processors to archive their sound. Only one lp which is criminal. A big influence on Boardcast and Stereo Lab.

Steve Kuhn - Time To Go - Buddah Records [Steve Kuhn]
What can you say about this album. Steve's an American jazz pianist, composer with a big back catalogue of brilliant jazz records on labels like EMC but where most if not all are instrumental here he sings on must of the album. He's got a great style to his singing which goes so well with the pace and rhythm and mood of the whole project. It's feature bass from Ron Carter, Drums from Billy Cobham and percussion from Airto. Though you probably wouldn't guess that from listening.

Harold McKinney - Freedom Jazz Dance - Tribe [Voices And Rhythms Of The Creative Profile]
"Daddy what's the meaning of Jazz? Well son this" Well yeh I got my boy to say it but yeh I think this is the meaning of jazz. Freedom Jazz Dance is a jazz standard but Harold's version adds so much more. Darryl Dybka on Moog for starters. But it's just so fecking funky, the percussion is insane. Every time I hear this tune I want to dance my ass off. The meaning of Jazz? I think it sums everything I love about jazz and it one hell of a funky ride.

Joe Thomas - Sundown Express - Today [Is The Ebony Godfather]
Is The Ebony Godfather of the flute, well he's definitely up their in the family mob of flutists. Great funky jazz lp from 1970. Joe Thomas will no doubt be making another appearance in a future show. This Cedar Walton written tune was a hard one to pick from a great record.

Chuck Bridges and the LA Happening - She Don't Love Me - Vault [Chuck Bridges And The L.A. Happening]
I don't know any thing much about this group apart from I like this tune and I love the image of the band and the type face lettering on the cover.

Som Imaginario - A3 - Odeon [Matança Do Porco]
A progressive rock band formed in the early '70s in Rio de Janeiro by a core of musicians from the Minas Gerais state. I bought this from Portobello Market in the early 90's for a few pounds. Not sure if it is an original or not. It does have a different cover to another I've seen but it does look the part anyhow. A3 is funky rocky jazz tune. I need to check their other work.

Gregory James Edition - Changing Things - Dakar Records [Prophets Of Soul]
This is one funky mother of a tune. Way before it's time. Pretty damn hard to get hold off but quite brilliant. I do think this is the best track on the lp but they are all intersting pieces of music with some great covers.

Global Logic - The Tank - Basement 282 [Gotham City EP]
Deep house from Don Phil Asher. Love everything about this great track. Featured on the essentail Jazz In The House compilation series. Volume 2. Needs to be played loud, oh when those noises come in, oooo they sound so good.

Gaston - My Dreams - Hotlanta [My Queen]
A tour de force of a soul tune from this seminal soul funk outfit. Lush sweet soul vocals. From their great lp recorded around 1978. The lp is filled with funky numbers, check "Clock In" which was featured on a comp called Funky Soul, a brilliant work related quirky funk nugget. Travis Biggs - Tibetan Serenity - Source Records Inc [Solar Funk]
Muti talented Travis is credited to play the Harp, Violin, Synthesizer, Keyboards, Piano, Organ, Clavinet, Mandolin on this wonderful vibed recording from 1979. Pure jazz funk with a touch of disco through-out the album. This tune was featured on one of the crate diggers top compilations Dusty Fingers. Also Universal Sounds reissued "Challenge" which initially came out on his own T & C label with a pressing of 500 copies and was used by Travis as a demo. I haven't heard this so I don't know if this Tibetan Serenity is any different, I need to have a listen.

Oddisee - Autumn Run - Oddisee Music [Odd Autumn]
Mate this guy is so perfect in his beats and samples, crisp and clean and this track is just so bliss. I'm sure I got this from Bandcamp and don't know for sure if it was ever released on vinyl? I hope he does well :) Check his blog http://oddiseemusic.blogspot.com/

Andre Cymone - Baby Don't Go - Columbia [Livin' In The New Wave]
yeh it's a little cheesy but I do very much like it. Super cover art work. Bassist and song writer Andre worked with Prince for many years and married the rather beautiful Jody Watley (lucky git, I used to have posters of her up on my wall). The lp also has the tune Kelly's Eyes which is a Prince-esque very poppy and catchy tune.

Buck Rogers The Original Intro
Buck Rogers was da man. Was never a Colonel Wilma Deering fan, it was all about super sexy baddie Princess Ardala. Twiggy was just silly and Dr Theopolis was just a computer in a disc but I loved everything about this slighty camp disco era space saga sci-fi. None more so than the uber cheesy singing at the beginning, which I beleive was only used for a few episodes but it stayed with me forever. Sure if you were a fan too you will remember all the words. I do miss the good old days of science fiction.

I've been wanting to do a show for a very long time but always put it off due to time and the fear of it being a little ropey but deep down it has been a goal of mine to try. So please forgive the ruff edges, probably a bit dodgy sound quality and the inclusion of noises and samples dotted along the way but I wanted the show to be a personal journey which I wanted to share.
So you might find a few sound bites from films and tv shows which I like and I hope this makes up with the lack of my silly chatting spoiling the tunes. Intro - Battle of the Planets
Had to start off with one of the best animated space kids shows from my youth. Battle of the Planets. Just found out that the composer is a Hoyt Curtin who is credited to doing classics like The Flintstones and Top Cat to name a few. Sure anyone who watched this show remembers this brilliant intro and who can forget Keyop?

Ennio Morricone - Invenzione Per John - Dagored [Giu La Testa]
The first tune had to be from my favourite film Giu La Testa AKA A Fistful of Dynamite AKA Duck You Sucker. The music of Ennio is always renown for it deepness filled with layers and tons of strings. Almost every soundtrack he touched was a classic. This one though is my top pick, the emotion and spine tingling hairs on the back of your neck and goose bumps I get every time pretty much seals it's top place in my heart. Plus the film has such an emotional journey through friendship and respect that it makes me fill up with tears every time I see it. If you've not seen it before please check it. Another Sergio Leone classic.

Labi Siffre - Cannock Chase - PYE Records [Crying Laughing Loving Lying]
I love Labi Siffre, everything he has done. He's still I can't believe very underrated as a song writer. He should be a British institution. I know he got massive for his "Something So Strong" which yes it's a great tune but you can't be remembered for that or the Madness cover "It Must Be Love". Not sure why I picked Cannock Chase over many of his other tunes to be honest but I do so love those two loud bass lines at the beginning. Also love his relaxed way with singing a tune, which his poet side shines through in abundance. Can always rely on a Labi Siffre to cheer me up, now that's for sure.

Dreams - New York - Columbia Records [Dreams]
Can only imagine that this funk driven horn blasting tune sums up New York but I'm so sure it does every time I hear it. The group is not too dissimilar from Blood Sweat and Tears but they did excel in being more funky and this tune is a hard one to beat in the funky groove stakes. Check the cover also if you get a chance some nice artwork featuring people floating through the air.

Invisible Man's Band - Full Moon - Mango [Invisible Man's Band]
Featuring quite a few members from The Five Stairsteps you know they going to play some great tune out for this lp. I love this Full Moon tune it's got so many different styles through all it layers, classic soul filled with jazz and a strong African groove with the scatting. Nice looking lady on the cover too.

The Free Design - An Elegy - Project 3 [You could be born again]
When Light In The Attic re-issued loads of Free Designs Lps I just had to get them on sight esp as they were pressed on heavy weight vinyl and thick card gatefold covers. A lot of re-issue could learn a thing or two about repressing from those releases. One of those groups which you could just leave the lp running from start to finish. Most are off a sweet nature but the tune I have picked for this mix An Elegy has a quite a dark edge to it and probably wouldn't sound out of place on a Hammer House of Horror theme. A nice change from the group. They were from New York and where brothers and sisters with a huge talent for vocal arranging and orchestration. Total sound stereo indeed.

Broadcast - Echo's Answer - Warp [The noise made by people]
Felt the only tune or band to which to follow that Free Design was Broadcast and Echos Answer. Love all of their work and first heard the tune of there's which uses the music from Elephants memory from the film Midnight Cowboy. Was a very sad day in January this year when Trish Keenan had died, her lovely voice will play on through the brilliant body of work Broadcast gave to us.

Move D & Namlook - The Audiolounge - Ambient World [The Evolution of]
A beautiful inspired piece of Techno, Ambient music from German producers David Moufang, Peter Kuhlmann. Was put on to this guys by a friend and I can see from their Discogs page that they have quite a back catalogue for me to check.

Mikis Theodorakis - On The Streets - Paramount Records [Theme from Serpico]
This is the only Soundtrack I know from Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis. If anyone knows of any other of his works I need to check please let me know. You can never beat a good old chase theme and this one stands up there with some of the best. Its a great film from Sidney Lumet starring Al Pacino as a big beardy honest New York cop who blew the whistle on corruption in the police force only to have his comrades turn against him. Sidney Barnes - Love In The Moonlight - Parachute Records [Foot Stompin' Music]
Here's a nice vibed funky soul tune from none other that Sidney Barnes from Rotary Connection. Sidney was pretty big and much loved on the Northern Soul Scene with tunes like Standing On Solid Ground and You'll Always Be In Style. He's had some sweet videos done for him which can be seen on the tube.

Maxayn - Everything begins with you - Capricorn Records [Bail Out For Fun!]
You can always find a great tune from the Maxayn albums. This one has a nice dope feeling to it and be great for the smokers. Love those spacey synths. Maxayn went on the disco route after reforming as Mandre and did the lush Solar Flight (Opus I) which is one hell of a tune and always loved Keep Tryin.

Ronnie Foster - Love Satellite - Columbia Records [Love Satellite]
Ronnie Foster always looks like a lovely fella always brimming with a big broad smile on his On The Avenue cover most probably why he did the Cheshire Cat lp. I always have time for some good old funky times that Ronnie is so good at delivering. Love Satellite is no exception. Happy vibes all the way.

Raw Material - Time and Illusion - Evolution [Raw Material]
Mega rare psych prog from this amazing British band. I only came across them recently and was blown away by this tune. Did a quick search to try and track the lp down and was hit in the face by it's rare-ness and rather big price tag. That won't be in my collection any time soon and will have to coincide with the MP3 which I'm fine with but would love to have that cover artwork on my shelves. Fat beats and raw drumming great keyboards and some nice vibes really make this tune stand out. They did another lp called Time Is which is as rare as this one. Enjoy if you not heard it before you will like it.

Pantha Du Prince - Stick to my side (Walls version) - Rough Trade
I really like this tune. Electronic ambient and goes off a little pop indie but it all just sounds very nice on the speakers chilling back and relaxing. Pantha Du Prince is another techy artist I need to go and check a bit more. Any recommendations?

Kenny Rankin - Like a Seed - Little David Records [Like a seed]
Features his children singing the in the choir at the beginning all very cute and sweet and then big Kenny starts singing and it all takes off. Got some great arrangements this tune and the supple flute is a nice bonus. Positive message from Mr Rankin and the family. I do love a bit of Kenny and I'm sure there will be more featured tunes from his discography.

Pablo Moses - I Love I Bring - Liberty [I Love I Bring]
Pablo Moses has a wonderful style to his singing, such a lazy but happy way to his words and they sit so well with the raw skanks on the tracks and those fantastic synth laden arrangements. Every track a winner on this classic lp this was a hard choice to pick as I love "I Man A Grasshopper" "Revolutionary Dream" "Be Not a Dread" oh and the long sit back and enjoy 9 min tune "Come Mek We Run" a real classic reggae album.

Björn J:Son Lindh - Boathouse Club - Sonet [Bike Voyage 2]
AKA Jayson Lindh equals one extreme funky Swedish flute genius dude. Just check his Ramadan lp. Love his use of sound drawing air in whilst playing, makes for a different and very raw edge sound. I don't know if he was first to do it but it's definitely got copied later on. Boathouse Club is a mellow tempo hippy tune with a reggae pace and crazy grinding synth keyboards.

Jack Hammer - Rebellion - [Sings and Reads Songs and Poems of The Beat Generation]
Brilliant tune from the beat generation. Had to add a few words from Jack Kerouac. I do have a big love for the whole beatnik scene and loved their ideals. Mate you can't beat a title like 'A Hobo with an Oboe' and from another record of Jack Hammer's "From the Womb to the Tomb" which is from his Brave New World album which I don't think I will ever recover from after selling it to Soul Jazz records in the early 90's for £10 blooming pounds! at the time I was like brilliant and they had never heard of it but now I'm still gutted. Oh well.

Paul Horn - Joy - Paramount
A seven inch little gem of a tune. Have to thank Bacoso and his excellent Orgy In Rhythm blog for this beauty. Strings flutes rolling drums and nice touches of percussion. www.orgyinrhythm.blogspot.com

Ebony Rhythm Funk Campaign – Syncopated Madness - Chi Sound Records [Watchin' You, Watchin' Me]
I see this cats are still jamming. Massive respect. Mate when those strings first hit at about 1 minute in to the tune. BAM The hit you straight in the heart. Love the different vocals styles too on this wonderful track. I think they only did two albums this one and one on the UNI label. I might be wrong so don't quote me

Watson Beasley - Dimensions - Warner Record [Watson Beasley]
This was a recent purchase for me and a gamble that paid off in buckets. I've listen to this over and over and simple love it. It was such a top buzz when flicking through and came across the Dimensions tune. Absolutely love it when it twists up a few gears near the end and changes the pace completely. Makes you wanna move your dancing feet. Fantasy Island is a pretty good track also.

Undisputed Truth - Take a vacation from life - Whitfield Records [Method To The Madness]
Chaka Khan's sister Taka Boom excels in her vocal duties on this enchanting and captivating little ditty. Don't think they ever quite got to match their "Smiling Faces Sometimes" when they recorded for Gordy label but I have really enjoyed all their recordings. A real talented outfit.

Wax - When I fall in love - RCA [Do You Believe In Magic ]
A real beautiful soul tune from Wax who I have to admit to not knowing much about at all. They would quite happily sit next to the EWF in my eyes. I featured "April Lady" on one of my Soul Love Grooves mix 15 I think. "When I fall in love" got covered by Phil Upchurch in 1983 and a great job he did. I heard it for the first time djing along side The Legend who is Snoopy. I was quite blown away by it and hastily picked up a copy of the LP then a few months later came across the Wax lp and took a few listens and head scratching to remember where I had heard it before? Then it all clicked into place.

Eumir Deodato - Adam's hotel - MCA Records [First Cuckoo]
This tune is so fecking chilled out very unlike Deodato's brilliant CTI recordings that were pretty much played at the speed of light . Mellow times, just sit back and relax. Great quirky cover art which features a gigantic bird chasing a naked lady with a pram as you do.

Amel Larrieux - Wild is the wind - Bliss Life [Lovely Standards]
A slightly different direction for the sexy Amel and her lush vocal cords than say her classic and amazing Infinite Possibilities. This album is an acoustic little gem of jazz standards that suit her and is a very nice and enjoyable project.

Ennio Morricone - Dopo L'Esplosions - Dagored [Giu La Testa]
Coming full circle with another super lovelly tune from The Fistful of Dynamite LP. Was very pleased when Italian label Dagored released this great piece of art from Ennio especially as it came on 180 gram vinyl in a thick card gatefold sleeve and even has a free poster inside. Might get that framed one day but I don't really want to take it out of the cover. I just collect my annorak LOL

I only have the an MP3 of the sky tune. Been searching for sometime but just not popping up for me.
It's not the classic Skyy or the rocky pop group. But some group who recorded on EMI records. Any info much appreciated.

Slave - Seemed an apt start to the mix. The way you love is heaven. Simple.
The Jones Girls - They always delivery a goodie.
Apollo - Just a superb rare groove soul tune, heads up to Snoopy for nodding me on to this tune from a past mix.
William DeVaughn - So many classics from this guy with the smooth voice. A beauty for sure
Sky - Not the boogie soul classic Skyy but a not so known group on EMI records.A German only release maybe. Super tune
The Sylvers - one of my top favs of theirs.
Passage - Christian soul, a differnet kind of love but still soul love.
Central Line - Amazing beauty Brit soul maybe missed but a must check.

2009 Hot potatoes mix for the annual xmas swap a mix for the Brownswood forum. This years one went out to great guy Nikos. Now available to share. Hope you enjoy. Expect the usual mix of Soul, Jazz, Reggae Dub Disco Boogie Funk and a Latin tune mash up.

Lalo Schifrin - Escape from tomorrow - 20th Century 7"
Driving funk soundtrack wickedness from the one of the masters of the Soundtrack. Following on from his excellent work on Enter The Dragon. This single has the fun and funky "Ape Shuffle" on the A side. I used to play that flip out a lot to mixed reactions.LOL. Recorded in 1974.

Mantus - Freestyle Rhythm - Atlantic 12"
Some great head nodding disco funk beats. Loads of mental percussion and synth noises clash together to give an almighty rhythm.

Simba - Movin - Contour LP (Afro Rock Festival)
From the various artist compilation "Afro Rock festival" A cheapy to pick up. Normally in charity shops but filled with great Afro funk rhythms. features artists like Osibisa and Assagai but I've always felt this "Simba" tune is the best. Love the vocal.

Sound Dimention - Soul Bowl - Bamboo 7"
The B-side to the Clement 'Coxsone' Dodd produced "Winston Francis - Turn Back The Hands Of Time" tune from 1970. Awesome bass and wicked raw sound which so typifies the Coxsone camp.

The Tramps - Tom's Song - Buddah LP (Legendary Zinc)
Funky laid back tune with beautiful strings to boot.

Charles Brimmer - Just another morning - Chelsea LP (Expression of soul)
New Orleans Brimmer flies off some funky soulful vocals. Sure to have been played on the Northern Soul scene, a great dancer, great artwork on the lp cover too.

Cornell Campbell - I Will never change - Attack 7"
Silky sweet smooth bliss vocals from this Don on the reggae scene. Simply a beautiful soulful tune. Great label too. I can't get enough of this tune.

First Cosins Jazz Ensemble - Psalm - Capitol LP (For the cos of jazz)
I always thought that "Psalm" gets over shadowed by the immense "Please The Pleaser". This tune has a lot going for it. Some good old fashion jazz funk.

Amuzement park - Love Show down - Our Gang Entertainment 12"
A great boogie style funk 12" probably known more for the "Groove Your Blues Away" but I prefer "love Show Down". A good little soul group.

Jay Cee Band - Luxury Livin - (Rhythms of the Ancients comp)
I know nothing about this band. Taken from the "Rhythms Of The Ancients" compilation which came out round 2000. A real Dusty fingers style tune.

Ana Mazzotti - Agora Ou Nunca Mais - Top Tape LP - (Ana Mazzotti)
Gorgeous Brazilian rhythms and super sexy vocals from the lovely looking Ana. Big tune. This lp is full of style and very much recommended as an essential purchase.

Players Association - We're almost there - Vanguard LP (We got the groove)
A bit more toned down disco from the usually break neck speed disco freaks. Great groove and soul to this, one of my favourite of theirs, but I've been a fan of theirs for years. The band has featured big jazz artists like Joe Farrell, Jon Faddis and Steve Khan to name a few.

Devadip Oneness - Free as the morning sun - LP (Silver Dreams Golden Reality)
This one is from Carlos Santana. Not a bad lp, feel it would of been better with out all the electric guitar but that's just my taste. "Free as the morning sun" was extremely well covered by Mr Hermano in 2001.

Jayson Lindh - Mannheim Rocket - Atlantic LP - (Jayson Lindh)
Demented fast and funky flutes blasts and stabs from Jayson Lindh. I love this style. Such great passion and feeling.

Continental 4 - Nite Moods - Jay Walking Records LP (Dream World)
Stunning harmonies great production. A recent purchase this one last year. Still not check it all properly but this one really stood out for me.

Blue magic - Never get over you - Atlantic LP (The Magic of the blue)
A old classic. A beautiful soul song. Insanely infectious groove especially when it kicks into the instrumental half way through.

Honey Boy - A taste of class - Cactus LP (A touch of honey)
Reggae dub vibes from this mainly vocal album. This is raw. The echo attack is ear splitting and righteous. Quite a scares lp nowadays me thinks.

Earl Rodney - Peace Pipe - Antillana LP (Friends and Countrymen)
Afro beat jazz with steel drums. This lp also features the wicked raw and funky "Juck Juck" tune. Shout me if you what a listen. An lp I've had since I was about 16 and I always find time to have a listen.

Ben Sidran - Lust - Blue Thumb LP (I lead a life)
Easy listening funk jam with a great porno groove. This tune grows and grows but is way too short. Features awesome strings.

Jamaican Digital Early 90's Computer Dub

All from seven inch vinyl B-sides here's a selection of digital dub from Jamaica. The Uk was just starting to pull out all the stops on the digi dub scene at the tail end of the 80's to the beginning of the 90's but the JA digi scene had a certain RAW ness to them. To be enjoyed very loud with the bass as full as humanly possible for the full effect these tunes are different. Probably not to everyone taste but I'm sure they grow on you. These where all brought from the likes of The Dub Shack in Camden Lock, Daddy Kool record in Soho and Youth Sounds on Stroud Green Road. Expect some wicked basslines deep electro style synth keyboards and some great vibes.

Some Old House 12's

Went through some of my old house 12's the other day. I don't have much to be honest but these have some quality head nodding grooves and beats.
Worth the download alone for the last tune from Modaji - Starbursts over Orion which is a monster of a tune, in all 10 plus minutes of mellow madness bleeps and squeaks. Went to watch Azymuth play Live in Brighton back in 1997. Sure the club was The Conchord and the night was supported by Patrick Forge on the decks. Walked in at the beginning when he dropped that tune. Immense is not a big enough word for that tune. Azymuth were amazing but I just couldn't get that tune outta of my head.
Also featured on the mix are a couple of tunes from my good friend Trevor Loveys whose been turning out quality tunes for about 15 years now. Love of God is one of my favs of his. Plus the Blandford Superfly tune is a great stomper about a notorious local Fly which went around biting everyone about 10 years ago. Plus the UFO Yellow mix of The Planet Plan is firing for sure. One of those tunes you just had to rush out and buy when it got played. Gilles Peterson drop it on his show. Rememeber listening to it on the drive back to Bournemouth from London on the M25, a perfect driving tune. Had to keep reaching for the rewind button on the cassette player for many rewind selector moments.

The Soul Mysteries Four

Next up in my pet project investigating music with soul. This time having a helping hand from Dr. Charles A Forbin who is chief designer of a secret government project called Colossus, a gigantic super computer.
Colossus is very naughty and goes off on one wanting to control the whole world and putting poor Dr Forbin in a very stressful position of trying to save the whole of mankind. So as usual like the other help partners on my past projects, he ends up a little distracted and leaves the job to me. Doh!
Choons to check, the awesome sound of Smoke and the sublime tune Freedom of the Mind. The totally wicked Charles Earland tune and a weird and wacky as usual Eddie Harris track, the aptly named Loneliest Monk which seems to some up the mood. Used to listen to it loads when stoned in my mid teens. Probably not to everyone tastes but when it gets going it got a very a great groove which is very different to the norm. Mixed in the mash up is a few easy listening tunes some lovely raw soul from Sam Dees and a folk tune. plus a few nice and mellow tracks to chill too.

This mix is dedicated to Gary. Thanks for the support mate.

Nigel Martinez - Better things to come - State records - 78
Quite scares and underrated album from Nigel Martinez. Some really lovely soul music from this very American looking lp. Sadly I believe to be his only recording? I hope not, please contact me if you know any more goods.

Julie Roberts - Ain't you had enough love - Bluebird - 85
The lovely voiced Julie from Working Week fame does a sublime job of this Loose Ends written ditty. Which Phyllis Hyman covered on "Living all alone" LP.

Junior - Is this love - Mercury records - 82
This tunes is wicked. Goes down and sounds so good today. Easily my favorite by him. Check it out.

Chris Paul FT David Joseph - Expansions - Fourth & Broadway - 86
Quite a mental and brave version of the classic Lonnie Liston Smith classic. I love the scatting.

Side On - Magic - Beggers Banquet - 82
Great happy tune. I've loved this for years and have been searching for the right price. Was very happy to be able to add this to the collection recently.

Level 42 - The Pursuit of accidents - Polydor - 82
Wicked slap bass duties from the Level 42 boys. Also check "Starchild" from 1981

Steve Harvey - Something special - London - 83
Scottish soul boogie at it's best. Love this tune. Check his "Tonight" as well.

Touch - Love Something special - Elite records - 82
Quite a sort after tune now which can go for silly money. Happy with the 20p I luckily got it for.

Osibisa - Moving On - Calibre - 80
Total shock when I first found out these guys were from the UK. Still shocked to be honest. Not a bad tune for the disco funky scene. A good groove and the usual wicked horns and flute to add.

Canute - Turn it up (Instrumental) - Loose Ends records - 83
Canute Edwards was the guitarist on Linx. "Turn it up" is a great play out boogie tune. Pure groover.

Freeez - Keep in touch - Calibre - 80
Mad grooving up and down tune from the talented Freeez produced and led by John Rocca. This is there first release I believe.

Cayenne - Fires in the valley - Coda Records - 86
Some great sounding classic style British Jazz funk horns in da place. From the lp "Hot Nights".

Roy Gee & Energee - Im for real - Beggars Banquet - 82
Released on 12" on the Injection Disco Dance Label. I have it on the best of British Jazz funk volume 2 compilation lp from the same year.

Toba - Moving up - Connection - 82
Wicked tune from Toba. 12" on blue vinyl and goes for quite big money nowadays. Which I only found out recently. Head bopper tune. Featured on my Soul Boogie Encounter part 2 last year.

Second Image - Cool Breeze - Polydor - 81
Man I love this group. This is a boogie affair with jazz, electric sounds and a touch of reggae almost.

Not a bad lp with a few funky tunes like "Boogie on up" "Shack up" and a cover of "Brick house" to name a few.

Shakatak - Cosmic mellow? Polydor? White Label - 80? - 12"
Pretty sure it's the "Steppin" tune on the a-side and "Killing time" on the flip. But I can't find any info on this white label that has a second tune of the b-side. No idea what it is? So have named it Cosmic Mellow. If you know any info please get in contact.

THIS IS BRIT JAZZ FUNK
With some soul to boot.

Wobbling back from the Pub on Friday night I had a bad urged to hear Light of the Worlds - Don't Run.
By 4.30am it had turned into a Brit funk revival session.
The mix was nearly 3 hours long and had to be split in half as it was too big to upload. Lots left out and only wanted to put one tune from each group on, which was difficult to say the least.
Which one do you choose from a band like Second Image? So pretty much went for the 1st ones I came too.
They are not mixed in so feel free to cut and paste any that might be missing from your collection.
Plus give me a shout if you like to listen to a b-side cut or something. All from the original vinyl.
Hence no FBI as I only have that on MP3. And not sure if K.I.D where from the UK or not otherwise "Don't stop" would of been included. Lots missing but had to stop somewhere .

Put on a Southcoast Fun Your Ear night at the ibar in Bournemouth early summer with the Brownswood forum this year. 9 djs playing what they want on a 40 minute time slot each. This was my 40 Mins of disco funky flavours set which I played.
To be honest the mixing on this is pretty much the same as live. Rather robey LOL
Only problem is it doesn't include my alcohol fueled loony dancing along at the same time. Hope you enjoy? as it was so much fun. A very great night of fun.
Marsius - Suite for lovers might be a Sssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh tune.

No real rares but some great jazz moments but some great vibes.
Cannonball got George Duke playing. The Michael Longo tune I think might get missed because of the more funky moments and is a lovely modal style tune. Black Orchid is lush - simple. Memories of Coltrane is a epic percussive tribute tune. I love the almost cotton club sound to the Silver tune, it's got a great pace to it. A bit House, Techno, Detroit many be. Deep electronic sounds anyhow. I love the K-Led lp. Was a total random buy when it came out. Also the Celsius and Arken tunes are wicked as is the amazing As One tune from kirk Degiorgio, one hella of a deep tune. The Chukimai tune is shot away. Kicking off with the bass heavy Natty Dread the B side to “Rocking Vibration. Linval’s classics include “I Love to Smoke Marijuana” and “Don’t Cut Off Your Dreadlocks” but this one always hits the spot. Wicked play out tune.

Michael Cambell - Barber Saloon - Power Disc 7″
Killer tune. One of my absolute favourites. Bad ass tune. “He cut off his dreads then he turned bold head” Classic….. Also known as Mikey Dread and the Dread at the Controls. Love the way he does a little laugh every once and a while during the track.

Twinkle Brothers - Jahova featuring Sir Lee - Twinkle 12″
Jahova is a pure reggae anthem. This is a great take on the tune with Sir Lee toasting along side the tune. Sir Lee also featured on the great “Free Africa” tune from the Twinkle Bro’s. Another fav of mine is the massive “Faith can move mountains”

Al Capone - Rock Them Capone - Jackpot 7″
Boss tune from Dennis Alcapone. Was a friend with Dillinger who went under the name of Young Capone at the time before he changed it to the now Dillinger. Wicked label Jackpot, loads of great sounds came out from that camp.

Sister Nancy - Papa Dean - Techniques 7″
Wicked dj style from Sister Nancy on producer Winston Riley Techniques label. Mad tune from 1980. “Papa Dean wanna give me sardine Papa Dean wanna give me Butter Bean”

Dillinger - Stumbling Block - Black and White 7″
Dillinger always brings the goods. Another fav of mine along with the classic “Melting pot”. His Lp Top Ranking Dillinger on the Third World label produced by Bunny Lee is highly recommended.

Jah Thomas - Positive Vibration - Strong Like Sampson 12″
Taken the second part from Dave Robinson’s “Positive Vibration” on Linval’s Thompson Strong Like Sampson label. Jah Thomas had his own label “Midnight Rock” which he did the wicked mellow tune “Sweet Memories” with the Roots Radics.

Ranking Trevor - Give Thanks and Praise unto Jah - Greensleeves 12″
Big tune. Loved playing this out. I need to check his Cha Cha lp which he co did with Trinity with the fantastic title ” Three Pieces Chicken and Chips”. Sound like it should be a classic.

Jah Woosh - Keep us down in Poverty - Groove Music 12″
Amazing dj voice. Jah Woosh has always been one of my top toasters. Used to cain “Crooked Skank” from the 1974 Cactus label self titled lp. Also love his “Marijuana world tour” LP.

U Brown - Ape Man Skank - Jamaica Sounds lp
A cool cut from Mr U Brown taken from the DJ Spots compilation album. Great lp featuring Dillinger, Jah Stitch and Trinity.

Trinity - John saw them coming - Belmont Records 7″
Produced by legend Joe Gibbs. This dread tune can also be found on his “Three Piece Suit” album from 1977. Wicked dub on the flip side called “Roots Kunta Kintye” by Joe Gibbs and the Professionals.

Lee Van Cliff - Different Fashion - Dance Hall Records 7″
Finishing off with some classic rhythm - BIM. Also can be found on the 1982 Germain Revolutionary Sounds label record “Reggae Sunsplash” BIM.

Greg Perry - Come on down - 75 - Casablanca Records (One For The Road)
Strings galore from Mr Perry. A real dancer. Funky soulful and full of heart. One of only two albums from Greg. The other being "Smokin on RCA 1977. I need to track it down and have a listen.

Gary Toms Empire - Love me right - 75 - Epic (7654321 Blow your whistle)
Good old fashion funk from Gary Toms Empire. Bought this when I was about 15 and it really got me in to the funkier side of things. A little cheesy nowadays but I still love the cover. The whole band on stage with lightning clashing above them. Listening back now I think "Love me right" which I have included here is my favourite.

Julie Driscoll & Brain Auger - Break it up - 68 - ATCO (Open)
This is a killer tune. Been really blasting this of late. A right out there freak out tune.
Wicked drumming. Pure 60's groover. Play LOUD!!!!

Prodigal Creator - Life part 2 - 78 - Ballistic (Ballistic Sureshots)
Also known as Lord Creator. Wicked rhythm not unlike The Jolly Brothers Conscious Man but this is also produced by the mighty Lee Perry so that's not strange. Its the dub of "Such is Life"

Assagai - Kinzambi - 71 - Sounds Superb - (Afrorock)
Heavy raw afro funk. Watch out for the percussion its almighty. Was so freak out when I brought this as a nipper from Wimbourne Market for 20p. Oh they were the days LOL.

Root & Jenny Jackson - So far away - 70 - Beacon - 7"
British Ike and Tina Turner from Leeds? Reggae Folk Soul. Raw heavy stuff. And usually a cheapy to pick up.

Negril - Light House - 75 - Klik records - (Negril)
Bizarre mix of reggae and jazz artists. Negril features - Family Man and Peter Tosh from the Wailers - Cedric Brooks and Joe Higgs plus two CTI record stars - Richard Tee and Eric Gale. Some work others don't. Light House starts spectacularly but goes off a little at times but redeems itself for the finale. Great album artwork.

Almighty - Mackarus Serenade - JGM (Almighty Chapter 2)
A monster Synth moog showdown from the master producer Joe Gibbs. From the second in the series of Almighty Chapters. I think they got to 5. Please shout me if they did more.

Norrie Paramor & his orchestra - Ironside - 74 - Contour (Law Beat)
I do like a good cheesy soundtrack cover. And Ironside is big and fat and funky. Love the siren's at the start. Still the "3 days of the Condor" on the Big Terror lp is probably one of the best soundtrack cover tunes.

John Dankworth - Holloway House - 69 - Fontana - (Off Duty)
I don't know much about John Dankworth. I think he is British and keyboard player and conductor. Holloway House is a fantastic tune, great funky sounds, goes a little cheesy at times but if it didn't this wouldn't be out of place on a Dusty Fingers comp me thinks.

James Last - I can't move no mountain - 75 - Polydor (Well kept secret)
Wicked tune from one of James Last best albums IMHO. Very funky throughout. But this one is the best on there. Demented synths a bit of scat singing, lots of boogie soul and strings. What more could you ask for.

Commodores - Rise up - ? (pre Motown) - Perfect records (Rise up)
Brought this lp along time ago. And have never known anything about it. This released vinyl is from Germany's Perfect records label. But it has no date for when the recordings where done. Pre Motown i think. The album is mainly cover versions but Rise up is an original track written by producer Jerry Williams.

Michel Legrand - La Piscine - 77 Springboard (Beautifully yours)
Wicked piece of groovy music from this talented French musical composer, arranger, conductor, and pianist.

Nancy Wilson - River shallow - Capitol Records (The right to love)
Such a beautiful album. I could picked many tunes from this recording. Such an unbelievable amazing voice. Simply stunning lp.

The Peddlers - Time after time - 67 - CBS (Freewheelers)
Amazing Jazz folk soul from The Peddlers. Roy Phillips was born in my home town of Parkstone Poole. Time after time is a great show piece of their style but it's "Suite London" recorded with the London Philharmonic Orchestra which is the album to get. A true master piece. Loads of info on this great band can be found here . Wicked site.

The Presidents - You Cheated on me - 71 - Sussex (5-10-15-20-25-30 years of love)
Stupidly great drumming on this track from The Presidents. Another sublime soul dancer

Meirelles e Sua Orquestra - Na Baixa do Sapateiro 74? EMI (Brazilian Explosion)
Synthesizer CRAZY, very funky fun tune. Also Sprach Zarathustra style. Did Deodato have anything to with this recording?

The Spinners - Now that we're together - 76 - Atlantic (Happiness is being with the)
Well I know they are cheesy but this is a great feel good tune with many vocal talents. Brings a smile to your face.

The Gimmicks - Goin out of my head - 70 - Decca - (Brazilian Samba)
Swedish easy listening gone mad!!!! Quite a sort after album from the Gimmicks. Especially for Roda a sure fire Brazilian classic. But I have always loved "Goin out of my head". Not sure if they recorded any more material?

Rupie Edwards All Stars - Free up da weed dub - 76 - Cactus - (Jamaica Serenade)
Massive tune when I was a stoner in my teens. Not sure why LOL. Wicked killer synth and mellow miniamal groove. A classic.

Roland Kirk - Why Don't they know - 67 - Verve (Now please don't you cry, beautiful Edith)
Beautiful jazz from Mr Kirk a truly remarkable musician. Lovely sweet picture photo on the cover. His wife, Edith maybe? I don't know but there's a real passion there.

Dudley Moore Trio - Poova Nova - 70 - Decca (The world of)
Makes me laugh every time I pull this lp out the racks and I see his big face on the cover. Man he was funny with Peter Cook but man can he play. I only have this album and very much need to track down his other recordings.

Got rather blasted on wine and spirits over the xmas holidays and got in a soul mood one night. So I thought I would do both together as the room was filling nicely with records.

Check the little heard of "You're the one" from the Emotions. Mental 80's sounds with bliss vocals from Shelia. And mellow out to ten minute of Float on. Its all about Larry. On Soul Love Groove Number Nine

Then on Volume 10. Check the strings and sweet vocals from Paris. Beautiful.

Awesome from Sons of Jah feature the very different vocals of Negus Dawtas. Incredible voice. Great bass and wicked organ from Earl Lindo. The B-side called " His Majesty's Authority" has Lindo going bonkers with some serious Keyboard action under his aka of Wiya Lindo.

Jazzbo and Brentford Disco Set - Natty Thing A Ling Part 2 - Studio 1 - 7"
Nice vibed tune from Prince Jazzbo. Love the soft keyboards on this, oh so nice and with Jazzbo chatting coming in over the top. Wicked tune.

The Revolutionaries - Round 1 - J&L Records - (LP - I came I saw I Conquered)
Some nice bleeped out dub from the Channel One Studio recorded 1980. With the vocal supplied by Barrington Levy.

Glen Brown (Jah Son) - Lambs Bread Version - South East Music - 7"
Killer Killer TUNE. The spin back is so crude RAW and totally amazing. Love this tune. Got this from Dougie Wardrops Dub Shack Stall on Camden Lock in the early 90s. Used to love spending time checking the sounds there. Always been a bit confused as who this is by. It has been reissued but as Sylford Walker. So I don't know if Glen Brown was taking the credit as he Plays Guitar and Produces. Hopefully some one can clear it up for me?

Twinkle Brothers - Magnetic Enforcer - Twinkle - (LP - Dub Massacre)
Bad ass tune from the Twinkle Brothers. Heading nodding madness from these dons. Amazing bassline sound system bleeps and noises and awesome guitar skank. Top class version of there Magnet tune. Essential business.

Lacksley Castell - Tug A War Games - CSA Records - 12"
Probably my fav of his but so hard to call with his other great tune "What a great day". Heard he did a tune with Hugh Mundell called "Jah Fire" would love to hear that.

Al Capone - Six Millionn Dollar Man - Jackpot - 7"
ridiculous tune and quite insane. I do wonder if he just turned up and thought "Yeh I gonna toast about Steve Austin". Doesn't go with Leroy Smarts sweet vocals but then thats the point. A wicked dread tune which always brings a smile. "drink up da tonic and turn Bionic" Fantastic. LOL

Well Charge Crew - Counter attack - Well Charge - 7"
Might be The Revolutionaries? Wicked fun tune from the Well Charge camp. Pure kids telly music. This tune with lighten anybodies mood. Grinding sythns and moogs? Sublime.

Fatman Riddim Section ft Maxi - General Amin - Top Ranking Sounds (LP - Heavyweight Dub)
Wicked rhythm and straight ahead groove from the Fatman. Mixed up at the Channel One Studios by Maxi AKA Maxi - Millian the New Emperor of Dub. LOL - Wicked Percussion.

Ossie Hibbert All Stars - Leggo dub - Cash and carry records (LP - Leggo Dub)
Love the heavy weight vinyl this is pressed on, it weighs a ton. Pretty bonkers Lp through out, lots of Toilets getting flushed and bleeps, horns and cartoon noises. This is the tune I use on my T-shirt site home page.

Desie Roots - Weed Fields - Hawkeye Records - 12"
Quite a sort after tune this one and a little tricky to hunt down. Recorded 1980 and feature the equally good tune "Burning" on the flip.

Jah Shaka - Peace maker - Jah Shaka Music - (LP - The Disciples)
Amazing stuff from the King of the UK sound systems. I have tons of his tune on vinyl and this one has probably had the most plays. And to be honest I have to invest in a new copy as this one has seen better days. Love every tune.

Fatman Riddim Section ft Touter - Pipe Load - Top Ranking Sounds (LP - Featuring Touter)
Another from my Top Ranking Sounds Label LPs. Great organ and keyboards from the man "Touter" in a Jackie Mittoo style. To be honest I don't know much about Touter apart from I think he Produced a few Inner Circle LPs.Great tune

Jah Skerta and Dream - Darkness - Wackies - 7"
Sweet sweet vocals and harmonies from Jah Skerta and Dream. A very raw sound which sounds a little out of tune at times but this just adds to the beauty of this lovely tune. Deep reggae soul music.

Mystic Eyes - Judgement Time - Burning Sounds - (LP - Mysterious)
Man this tune is defienlty up there with the top of my roots tunes. The pain and heart used in his vocals and the harmonies is just so awe inspiring. Another of my very first reggae records I bought when in my teens. Such a heart felt tune which brings tears to my eyes nearly ever time I hear it. Very deep music. I LOVE IT ….SIMPLE.

Stupidly said a while back that I would compile a mix of some of my favourite reggae tunes. This turned out to be a just about impossible task. Just about ever other record has a tune I really like, so this was hard!!!! But here it is - some of my favourite sounds - roots flavour.

Blackbeard - Electrocharge - (LP - I wah dub) - More Cut
From the Don Dennis Bovell. This tune is aptly named and electro charged it is with none other than Nick Straker (from "Just a little bit of Jazz" fame) on Poly moog duties. This Lp feature Jazzz from the film Babylon. And is a quality purchase with every tune a killer.

The Aggrovators - Dunza Dub - (LP - Rockers Almighty Dub) - Clock Tower
Heavy drivin bass freaked out dubbed horns with Horace Andy on vocals. A more raw dub than Horace's Money 7 b side flip. Essential business.

D-Roy Band - Trenchtown Skank - 12 - D-Roy
Another drivin rhythm drum and bass style. Should of been used in a film. Play loud very loud. It has the rather cheesy but great reggae cover of "Mind Blowing Decisions" on the A side.

Tradition - Alien Circus - (LP - Captain Ganja and the Space patrol) - Venture
Bought this in Berlin for 10 euros this year. Well chuffed. This album hasn't been of the decks much since getting back and is excellent through-out. Mental cover art work too. Spaced out dub with lots of over the top noises and samples. Wicked lp

Carnastoan - Sweet Melody - 12 - Carnastoan roots
Another bit of magic from Dennis Bovill. Real head nodding deepness with chopped up skank. When the dub comes - Kaaapow!!!! Also has the wicked "Mr Workhard" on the flip.

Junior English - You don't care - 7 - Larry's
Wow this tune is amazing. Nuff said. But check the rhythm classic reggae drum n bass with sweet dubbed out vocal from Junior English. Bounce up and down tune.

Desmond and Joe - Huddersfield Dub (LP - Dubbing in the UK) - Starlight
Another mad drivin drum and bass tune. I don't much about this UK destination dub LP apart from that its wicked. Every tune a winner even Southampton dub. Hee hee. Could of picked any of the tunes to be honest but this one just picks the post. Love to know if there was a vocal version of the album or any other info? Mr snoopy please step forward :-))

Johnny Osbourne - Kiss Somebody - (Lp In Nah Disco Style) - Chacha
Heavy tune. With advice on catching a cold from cheating ladies. Lots of laughs. Remember to kiss them on the hand. Greats sound system tune with an almighty dub too. (BullFrog think he a TOAD????)

Ethnic fight band - Out of one man comes many dubs - (LP - of the same name) - Ethnic Fight Raw business - Dubbed to the max. BAM

Mighty two - Informer - 7 - Heavy Duty
This tune always brings a smile. Had it on a mix tape for years. Finally got it recently. Insane dubbed out version of "Cultures - See them a come" and the b-side to Prince Mohammed Informer tune. From the almighty Joe Gibbs. Classic case of going mental with the effects button. A real floor stomper.

Black ark players - Jah (LP Black Ark in Dub) Black Ark International
Deep deep tune. Bad ass drum and bass with added bleeps. Jah love. Dub doesn't get much better than this me thinks.

Sammy Dread and Papa Tullo - I'm a dread Locks - 12 - Strong like Sampson
Wow what can I say about this tune. It pretty much started it all for me. Picked it up when I was about 17 had just started having a puff or two, when Papa Tullo starts toasting on the dub, shit it nearly killed me. Probably one of my most played tunes. Always finds itself back on the decks.

Carl Harvey - Ecstasy of Mankind (LP - Ecstasy of Mankind) - Cancer records
Hard beats and super raw wah wah guitar. Brought this in Daddy Kool records and was never that taken with the rest of the album but the lp title track is a great piece of raw funky reggae.

The Ice Breakers with the Diamonds - Dub Garvey (LP Planet Mars Dub) - Virgin
Amazing dub from the IceBreakers band This is a dub lp of the sweet vocal talents of the Mighty Diamonds. Seems to have got quite rare on original now and goes for a bit now me thinks. But a great lp to pick up if you see it.

Ras Imru Asher - Look of Love - 12 - Selatone
Well what can I say about this tune? Is it my favourite reggae tune. Shit I guess but there are so many close too. Bought this in Amsterdam when i was 19. Its so soulful deep and a fantastic love song. Oh and that flute. Man when it all dubs down. Bang! Side b "Four fold runner" is great too. Not sure if it particularly rare or that well listened too. But man I love it so much. "When you got love in your eyes don't tell no lies". Wisdom.

Whilst doing the Lovers Rock mix last week was re spinning a few of these.

Starting off with my favourite Janet Kay which I bought when I was 16. Never will I bore of this tune. It just so special. Side B Rock the Rhythm is equaly as good. An essential purchase. Also check the beauitful "You bring the sun out" from her which is sublime.Also included is another right out there classic from Winston Reedy with Baby Love....... Tune.
Any lover's mix wouldn't be right with out the master Gregory Isaacs included. So I've added the 12" of Permanet Lover. Lovely tune.
A great nostaglic trip for me doing this mix. Been a long time since I gone through that section of tunes. Expect lots of high pitch vocals and mellow vibes. Nothing that rare, some a little too sweet but all good fun for naughty frolicks and grooving with a smile on yah face.

Was revisiting Kirk DeGiorios Folk Funk R-Solution show walking back from the pub Friday night and got inspired to do this. A lot of music very close to my heart. I hope you enjoy it in its 74 mins of fun.Many thanks to Mr Kirk Degorgio for always playing and doing such great shows. We all need more. Easy my favourite dj. When he plays those string specials which he always seems to dig out. Mellow Jazz Excursion

Featuring a sshhhh tune!!!! Well maybe?

I've never been one for secret tunes probably because I don't have many. And I feel it's all about the sharing. But the Harold Butler tune June Day has always been a favourite tune I thought not many would know and thought it was time for it too show it's face. Just a beautiful piece of jazz music with lots of modal moments. I purchased it when I was about 18 years old buying reggae and was very disappointed with it at the time as it didn't have any on it. But luckily I kept hold of it and a few years later I dug it out and was shocked by this amazing mellow tune. If you do get a chance, check it out.

Now I will find out that everyone knows it anyway, Hee hee. But hey it's a lovely tune.

Listen to the piano notes in Soliloquy. On head phones Mike Longo actually sounds like he's in the room, you can hear his fingers on the keys, awesome modal bizzness.
And the Asha Puthli was a total surprise to me. Had the lp for quite sometime, never liked it that much, was thinking of selling it when I came across "Truth" the mellowness blow me a way. Been caning it a bit to make up.
Right thats enough nonsense from me!!!!

Soul Love Groove Volume 7

Next in the soul series number seven. A few little bits of info on the mix. Dates label and the albums they are from. Starting with Arnie's Love.
Mad soul boogie business from Arnie's Love with "I'm out of your life" Man what a tune. Streetwave records 1983.
Chicago's Champaign happy vibed "Can you find the time" from their lp "How 'bout us" was recorded on CBS records in 1981.
Al Johnson lovely "let me love you (like you want to be loved)" from his excellent 1978 debut lp on Marina records "Peaceful" which has the original version of the superb "I've Got My Second Wind" which he recorded again for his "Back for more" Lp.
"Don't ever stop loving me"from Ebonee Webb is from their Capitol records lp "Too Hot" recorded in 1983.
Orange County's David Oliver amazing if not a little cheesie "Summer love" produced by Wayne Henderson on Mercury records from 79. Sadly David Oliver died young after 4 lps from 77 to 80. A real shame as there would of been some beautiful stuff to come.
Sweet vocal from The Whispers with "Can't Stop Loving You Baby" can be found on their 81 Solar Records album "This kind of lovin"
Shockenly good "The Edge Of A Dream" from beauty Minnie Ripperton can be found on her Perfect Angel lp on Epic records from 1974. Still muchly missed. A pure goddess.
Chic's classic album Risque features the lovely " A warm summers night" Atlantic records 1979
Rene and Angela - Imaginary Playmates as promised from a past Soul Love groove mix. A truly fantastic tune from their lp Wall to wall on Capitol recorded 1981.
Bamboo flute player Kazu Matsui gives the wonderful Japanese soul jazz sound of "Romantic Notions" from his group the The Kazu Matsui project 84 album "Is That The Way To Your Heart"
The Super talented Ronnie McNeir who arranges produces plays and sings, features with "spirit of love" a fantastic spacey soul jazz from 1975.
Super mellow action from Kleeer with "Say you love me" featured on their 1981 lp License to dream.

Uk Digital Roots and Dub Steppers

Reggae music has a very deep place in my heart. Spending a lot of time travelling up and down from Bournemouth to London in my late teens record hunting I discovered The Dub Shack in 1989. Situated at the top of the Camden lock market and run by sound-engineer Dougie Wardrop. Whilst flicking through countless obscure roots tunes for some goodies for my bag, he puts on this awesome tune with a sound I hadn’t really heard before. It turned out to be the first 7” inch from his Conscious Sounds label, called “Steppin Time” by Centry . 30 seconds in, the tune was in my bag. But straight after being blow apart by that tune he then dropped in Sound Iration in dub from Nick Manasseh on the W.a.u Mr Modo label. Man what an lp!!!! Travelling home a very happy man, this was the start of a great love affair with the UK digital dub steppers scene. Lots of trips to Youth Sounds, Honest Jons, Daddy Cool and Dub Vendor. And another genre to add to my ridiculous music needs lists and more pain for the ever increasing credit card bills……………….

Also featuring the awesome Arabesque from Japanese nu jazz star Jazztronik. Fantastic percussion beats intro from John Beltran which leads into the sublime “Kissed by the Sun”. Plus one of my firm favourites, the awesome, I can never get bored of “Searchin for the sun” from Mr Xantone Blacq. Put on your dancing shoes and dance the samba.

Soul Mystery Part Two

Next up in the series investigating music with soul is Volume two of The Soul Mystery. Helping out for a bit on this episode is scientist Dr. Scott Nelson aka The 4D Man. Things were going well until half way through when the amplifier which enables a person to enter a 4th dimensional state went wrong. Allowing himself to pass through any object, Dr Scott discovers that each time he does though he starts to age rapidly. So after he turned on me trying to suck out my life force I managed to sedated him with some more mellow tunes. But he managed to escape............. Bugger.

Soul meets boogie volume one. Been a little while since my last mix, so I hope this one goes down well. This mix features some really great boogie tunes which need to be played at a very good volume, and danced too around the room. Bonkers synths and serious slap bass in only the best way. The first tune Toney Lee in my honest opinion is worth the download alone. But all the tunes should, and I hope will hit the mark, if you like this awesome 80's sound you will just love the groove. Soul Love Groove Vol 6

I had the opportunity of having this mix played on the excellent Serbian Radio Show "Balanco". Which is presented by top guys Milic AKA Spacewalker and Jazzmate. If you get a chance to check their great shows go to B92 on Mondays from 10pm. Expect a great musical showcase of tunes.

First up is the wonderfully two step sound from Maxi Anderson ( check those strings) on bizarrely Blue Note Records. From 1977 simply entitled Maxi. A pretty good album through out but “Lover to Lover” being easily the best from the set. Also check “Bobbi Humphrey's” excellent cover version.

Switch’s “You pulled a switch” from their self titled lp on the Gordy part of Motown label is a great funky little tune. Switch had a great line up which featured Phillip Imgram and Tommy and Bobby DeBarge who were to leave quite early on to join up with the rest of the family DeBarge. Quite a good lp through out but this tune is by far my favourite from the lp.

Only recently found out that Delegation are a UK band (shock). Having been an avid fan of “Oh Honey” (on SLG 2) I had always thought that they were American. I don’t think they ever really beat the class of “Oh Honey” but “Darlin (I think about you) from their self titled Mercury album from 1980 is a happy uptempo soul boogie tune, which always brings a smile to my face. A excellent dancer from this great group.

“It’s lovely just to know you” is from one of my favourite soul lps from the little known “Free Life”. An album which has to be picked up as it’s normally quite cheap. Produced by Philip Bailey who helps with the EWF sound. Was a hard decision between this tune and the mellow and demented synth keyboards of “Wish you were here”. On the CBS related Epic label from 78.

The debut 1975 Fantasy label album from Side Effect gives us the uptempo “Tree of Life” full of feel good vibes, just what you would expect from a Wayne Henderson's At-Home production. Respect to Mr Henderson you are a genius. He always gives that classic touch.

Another Philip Bailey produced lp. Here is the awesome groover “Special Lady” man this track is the bomb. I first heard this baby back in 96 when Kirk DeGiorgio dropped it on one of his shows. Blown totally away I had to track this down. This lp sits well in the record collection next to the above mentioned “Free Life” and your Earth Wind and Fire albums. Also features the beautiful mellow tune “Splendorland” Strings and horns arranged and conducted by Wade Marcus. Crazy insane flying animal shoes on the cover artwork too. Quite mad.

Next up Bill Summers and Summers Heat and his 78 Prestige lp called “Straight to the bank” with “it’s on my mind” a great little groover which sometimes gets a bit over shadowed but the disco/funk classic lp title track. Which is a shame as this in my honest opinion is the best tune on the lp.

New York blue eyed soul star Bobby Caldwell and his fabulous “What you won’t do for love” from his Debut lp on the Clouds label out in 78. A very talent musician Bobby Caldwell plays Keyboards/synthesizers bass and guitars as well as all vocals. Also check the excellent “Kalimba song” but frustratingly only goes on for 2mins Aaaaargh

King of the Trumpet Mr Donald Byrd gives the wonderful soulful sound of “Sunning in your loveshine” recorded in 1978 on his “Thank You...For F.U.M.L. (Funking Up My Life)” lp. Another favourite from this lp is the mellow “Cristo Redentor”

The beautiful “Morning Sunrise” is up next. From Twennynine ft Lenny White. This lovely mellow tune is from the 1979 Elektra lp “Best of friends” and is written and sang by none other than Donald Blackman. Found out recently that there is a different version on the Weldon Irvine “Two Sisters” lp which was only released a couple of years ago but was recorded also in 1979. The Weldon Irvine version has a slower and more raw feel and also features Mr Blackman.

I do love the Japanese soul jazz sound and Yutaka’s “The rest of my life” is one of my firm favs. From the Alfa label self titled album produced by Dave Grusin and Larry Rosen. It also features the lovely “Love Light” which has the beautiful vocals of Patti Austin. “The rest of my Life” has this amazing flute sound from a traditional Japanese bamboo flute called a shakuhachi. An all round excellent lp from 1978

Mellow cosmic synths and blissed out sounds are all present in “Especially for you” from Manchild’s Chisound “Power and Love” lp. Which featured a young up and coming star, none other than Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds. The album also has the superb “We are we”. Well worth checking out and sure to be on a up coming mix.

As promised from Soul Love groove 4 Rene and Angela “My first love” gets an airing. A superb string tune that is just pure class. That opening is a neck tinglier. Like “Can’t give you up” this is from their 3rd lp “Rise” from 1983 on Capitol records. Also check out their other lp in particular “Intimate Strangers”, a tune and a half and another from them that will have to be included on a future mix.

UK disco funk band Gonzalez bring the fantastic mellow tune “Your all I need to see me through the day” very different from the rest of the album which features the disco dancing classic “Haven’t stopped dancing yet” On the Sidewalk label from 1979.

Soul Love Groove Vol 5

First up is the Motown signed Platinum Hook with their up tempo lady finding groover "Gotta find a woman". Taken from their 1st lp of the same name recorded back in 78.

Al Johnson follows this with a tune I first heard on the Dr Bob Jones surgery radio show around 96. Totally blown away, I searched this one out. Taken from the lp entitled and featuring the classic "I'm Back for more" which featured Jean Carn. "I've got my second wind" is my personal favourite from this great record.

Track 3 "I love you more and more" is from Barry White protégé Tom Brock. Taken from the lp of the same name and filled with lush strings, which you can only come to expect from the Lord of the string.

The Mike Stokes produced Creative Source follows next with the awesome string affair and my favourite of theirs. I've played "Thanks for lovin me" so many times but it has never lost any of it shine. A deep tune with an amazing vocal style and taken from their underrated lp "Pass the feelin on" recorded in 1975 on Polydor, which also has the funky soul tune aptly named, "Funky Luvah".

From their first lp from 1979 on the Philadelphia label I’ve decided to go for “Who can I run to” which is just a beautiful vocal outing from the super talented Jones Girls. But this lp also has the great cuts “This feeling’s killing me” and “We’re a melody”.

The smooth groove of Marc Sadane “One way love affair” produced by James Mtume. Taken from his album of the same name on the Warner Brother label from 1981. Sadane also did the dance floor boogie tune “One minute from love”. Which I will add to a later mix.

Track 7 is from Eloise Laws, part of one of the immensely talented Laws family. Which includes big bother and flutist Hubert, sister Debra, who recorded the excellent “Very special” lp, and jazz funk little brother Ronnie. This killer string attack from “Love comes easy” is from her ABC album simply entitled “Eloise” from 1977 and she still performs today. Recording since around 1967 Marlena Shaw has made some truly amazing songs and recorded for many great labels. From Cadet, Blue note and Columbia. I decided to add one of her not so well tunes “Moon Rise” to this mix. Which is a beautiful and mellow tune with sweet lyrics. Produced and arranged by Bert DeCoteaux on her Columbia “Acting up” LP from 77.

Bronx born and “Shame” fame singer Evelyn Champagne King take up track number 9. “The show is over” from her 1977 RCA debut album “Smooth talk” is co written by T life and Dexter Wansel. A fantastic mellow tune and probably my favourite from her.

Then follows a bit of an obscure one from Clifford Coulter, which is produced and features Bill Withers. Recently picked this up on a reissue as a gamble, and it has really grown on me. Very mellow grooves with great percussion and awesome polymoog sounds. The lp is from 1980 on Columbia records and is called “The better part of me”. I could not find much info on him, so I don’t know if he made any more records.

On to the lovely gorgeous Chaka Khan. One of my all time favourite vocalist, along with Phyllis Hyman, Linda Lewis and of course Minnie Ripperton. There is always a great track to be found on the Rufus records, and “Smoking Room” is another one I always have time to listen too. A folky funky tune which is found on their second lp on ABC records called “Rags to Rufus” recorded in 1974.

Then finishing off Soul Love Groove number 5 is Chocolate Milk with the amazing slow, mellow and funky “How about love” featuring some wicked horn arrangements. Chocolate Milk probably being more famous for the classic funk outing that is “Action speaks louder than works” but this tune is up there with their best.

Soul Love Groove Vol 4

Starting of Soul Love Groove 4 is the dancing soul classic “With your love I come alive” by Atlantic Starr on their Debut lp of the same name on A&M records out of 78. Definitely one of my favourites of theirs, but they have done so many. From “Touch A Four Leaf Clover” to “Circles” to “Send for me” to name but a few.

“So delicious” from The Pockets on what I think was their last lp they recorded is a great head nodding tune with a real nice vibe. The Pockets had a lot of comparison with the mighty Earth Wind and Fire especially as they where produced by Maurice and Verdine White. This tune is from the lp on Columbia records with the same name as the track, which was recorded in 1979.

The songstress Jean Carn with her amazing vocal talent fills the place of track number 3. After working on such sublime albums with Doug Carn on the Black Jazz label. To the jazz classic “Slewfoot” and her work with Norman Connors she went on to record at least 8 solo lps. With “My love don’t come easy” taken from the 79 Philly lp “When I find your love” showing she was as excellent doing soul as she is jazz.

I had always dismissed Cameo on a soul tip over the years, to my loss. Cameo can do soul as well as funk, which you can tell from “Sparkle”. Which appears on the Chocolate City labelled “Secret Omen” lp from 79. Which is quite different from their "Post Mortem" and “Rigor Mortis” funk days.

The LA Boppers used to be Side Effect’s back up band and must have had a lot of influence from producer Wayne Henderson as you can tell in the music direction they had taken. With similarities to the other Henderson produced jazz funkers Hiroshima. The LA Boppers went on to record 4 lps with this tune “I can’t wait” coming from their 2nd simply called “LA Boppers”

A personal top favourite tune is from Keith Barrow. From his 2nd lp for Columbia Records “Physical Attraction”, is the beautiful “You know you want to be loved”. Produced by the man Mike Stokes of Creative Source fame. Sadly Keith Barrow died young and only recorded 3 lps. And I’m ashamed to say I only have his 2nd lp. I must get on the case. Especially as I love this so much.

Rene and Angela where a fantastic duo who recorded four excellent lps in the eighties. This one “Can’t give you up” with its Barry White style strings is an corker of a tune and is from their 3rd record on the Capitol label called “Rise”. Which also features the mellow string blissness that is “My first love” which will be making an appearance on a future Soul Love Groove. They are probably best known for the eighties groove attack “I’ll be good” from their 88 lp “Street Called Desire”.

Man how I love Barry White and his out of this world arrangements. This guy is so consistent on his love groove tunes. All filled with the strings I so love. “She’s everything to me” is an example of the genius what Barry White is. A very mellow tune with such heart. From his not that often seen lp “Sheet Music” on his Unlimited Gold label from 1980. The title track “Sheet Music” is an all out boogie classic. As played by Norman Jay over the years. Big up King Barry.

Track number 10 is from Breakwater who only recorded two records but both are exceptional and where on the Arista label. One called “Breakwater” the other “Splashdown” which the track “You know I love you” is taken from. Two great albums filled with soul and heaps of funk.

Can’t help but include tracks featuring Chaka Khan, here again with the excellent Rufus. “Destiny” is another example of pure vocals, jazz grooves and those amazing sublime strings I do so love. “Destiny” is on the “Street player” lp from 1978 on ABC records which also includes the other great tune of their's “Stay”

Last up is Patrice Rushen with “Didn’t you know? ” from her Elektra lp simply entitled “Patrice” which was recorded in 1978. Another great soul artist who’s background is very jazz originated, with her Prestige recordings but went on to deliver some classic soul tunes with added jazz funk. And she happens to be gorgeous too.
